What has happened to TN? What is wrong with Greeneville????
You have an elderly veteran simply ask that someone to speak loud enough for him to hear and you arrest him?????
Has Greenville gone the way of D.C. and Obama and Democrats that free speech is no longer allowed?
What on earth is happening to our nation when the government refuses people the right to free speech and arresting our veterans?
Do nothing but socialist or communist live in Greeneville now?
Thank GOD I do not live in Greeneville, and I will be sure to avoid Greeneville in my future trips around the area.

Disorderly conduct?I think not,you need to read the law as it is written.there was no disorder caused. If anything the comittie was in violation for not presenting it self in an audible fashion, which is required by law.

WGRV just sent a text that the Commissioners are proposing a 10.5 property tax increase.. that should go over really well.. bet there will be more arrests soon. lol I was not there and do not know the story, but I will say, the Mayor should have spoken up where folks could hear what he was saying.. if there was a microphone and he didn't want to use it because he didn't want the public to hear what he/they were saying, then shame on him. If this older man was acting up then most times, folks like that are just escorted out of a meeting, not arrested. That seems like it is overkill to me too. Just saying. All it did is make us look like redneck yahoos. (Which we are not, of course. lol)

We have all seen the video (or you can if you have not yet). Mr. Overholt did nothing wrong but oh wait, he pissed Broyles off. That means concrete time I suppose?
I have not seen the video. Was Mr. Overholt sitting quietly before this occurred or was he joining in the other folks that were having a problem with the meeting, the sound, etc. This is not an indictment of Mr Overholt, merely a question. If he had been sitting there quietly and only at this point, asked the Mayor to speak up, then the Mayor is totally in the wrong. If Mr. Overholt had been part of the crowd "heckling" the Mayor, then it was still wrong to arrest him, but it does make the perception different. I don't really know of any fool that has a person arrested at a meeting- merely escorted out if there is a problem. This tells me that perhaps the Mayor has really thin skin or else, he does not like anyone questioning his authority. Shrugs. Or maybe both.

The only thing that I saw in the 20 minute video that Mr. Overholt did wrong was that he was the first to speak after Broyles got mad. I was not there on scene, but I saw nothing untoward from Mr. Overholt in the video.

Wow, it sounds as if the rumor is true. Freedom of speech is no longer lawful. Plus a citizen and resident of a city/county is subjecting themselves to arrest for requesting an adjustment be made at a public forum in order that all present can hear and understand what is being said. Now that could present a dangerous situation; imagine the horror of "an informed public". Beware - reaching the age of 76 years subjects you to charges of resisting arrest because you have severe limitations physically. Of course the witness to this breach of the Penal Code is a strapping, six foot plus, two hundred pounder twenty-something example of sworn-to-serve the public

Wow! I saw the video on The Blaze. This has gone viral. Arresting a veteran who asked them to speak up?? Too bad this country has forgotten that WE the people make the rules and the government works for US. NOT the other way around. It seems as if he is being charged with resisting arrest, too? Why? He went peacefully, asking if he was being arrested the whole time. Don't like the police-state our country has become. I noticed the shocked faces of others as he was being led out of the room. Why did they all not jump up in outrage??? I read about an incident like this twice a month or more. Things won't change until people get mad enough to band together and STOP this nonsense. This NEVER happened 30 years ago.

Politicians don't want to hear from the people they supposedly represent UNLESS it's a campaign donation.

I agree. Whispering is what they were doing. I think a few should be "taken to school ". Broyles and Cannon were wrong.

They obviously didn't want anyone to hear what they were saying.

So Eddie asks them to speak up and look what happened!

This town is a disgrace to the entire United States.

And, even worse, are people defending Broyles on here or the low-lifes who try to pretend that nothing happened at all and go on with their usual nonsense.

Broyles is not running for real economic so we won't have to worry about him but the strongest new candidate for mayor is a city policeman. Which was the arresting agency.

And by the way what in the world did steve burns have to do with an arrest in the city by city officers. The last time I checked that was the office pat Hankins and mayor candate Crum works. Eddie even said he was treated with respect when he got to the county jail. You Hankins supporters will say and try anything.

NOT to point of respect he shouldn't have been arrested in the first place, the man simply asked if they would speak up. Maybe the POLICE should brush up on the law they and the Mayer BROKE!!, called the Open MEETING act .since they called a public meeting this law was in affect. meaning anyone could speak,, he had NO RIGHT to do what they nor the police..did, according to the LAW.. anyone breaking it ,will have serious consequences..!!!

and this got picked up news papers and tv all over congrads MAYOR and the GPD showing what kind of POMPASS ass`s you are!!!! I say you will regret on election DAY!!! GREENEVILLE residents seen and will remember that little event. very WELL!!!!!!!!!
My two cents

I had a lot of respect for Broyles voted for him, worked in his campaign, supported him but no I have no respect for him, having a man arrested for asking a question, now I would be afraid to even speak to him , I might go to jail. Alan I am so upset with you I don't even want to see you any more. You made Greeneville Look like idiots I hope The man files a suit against Greeneville and I will encourage him to. Thank you Jenny, a registered Topix user who frequents this site, for actually having the courage and the morals to speak out against this. I don't always agree with everything you say here but I applaud and commend you for this comment!

Take note, other "green names", that this woman has morals, ethics, and understands what a tragic thing happened here in Greeneville!

Thank you, and had I been at the meeting they would have had to escorted me out also, because I would have said something then. That's just me.
