I used to use pdanet...www.junefabrics.com with a shared connection between the pdanet windows driver and the wired nic given a 192.168.1.x/24 ip address then configured the linksys wrt54g internet port with a 192.168.1.x/24 address and then left the wireless network the default 192.168.0.x/24 network back when I had a droid first generation along with my unlimited data plan through verizon. Got around the hot spot monthly charge that way, had decent (for the time) bandwidth, and had xbox live in the car too! Was stupid easy to setup and fun too lol...just not while driving that is. Of course nowadays a droid 1st gen ain't gonna cut it so I took the xbox out of the car and don't have a grandfathered plan either

If you root it, there are all kinds of hacks and features that are unlocked to tether it, use it with any carrier, pretty much anything you'd want to do to it. If you brick it though and it's under warranty, you're SOL. I've never had a problem rooting or jail breaking one but I know do people who've ruined their phone doing it.
