DA: Man had modified Ruger rifle
An Albany man gets five years in prison for modifying a Ruger .22 caliber rifle to look like an AK-47 assault rifle.

If we safely assume that the gun in the photo that accompanies the article is the gun he used...
1) It looks nothing like an AK-47. Even if it did, there's nothing illegal about modifying a gun to look like a different gun provided you don't run afoul of other laws (see 2 below).
2) It's been illegally modified from a rifle. It's what the ATF would consider a short barreled rifle.
3) He was already a person prohibited from owning a firearm.

Correct, it's below the legal length for a long gun.
