I have recently been acquainted with a second cousin of mine. I suppose I should say she found me and established a family relationship that had not existed before.
Now, I have always thought that the worst thing an old man could do, was to write about "how things were when he was young", but for this particular subject it is a necessary vehicle.
Back to my second cousin. She is about half my age and I know it seems odd to both of us to call each other cousins. Slowly over time however, she has visited and we have become comfortable with our family ties.
Now comes the part that requires me to tell you how things were "when I was young". Lately she and her family have been trying to take me and Gladys out for a meal but we have been putting it off. You see, my generation believed you never took anything from anyone if you already had it and if you did you would be "beholdin'" to them.
This however is now a "pay it forward" generation and folks my age have difficulty accepting that; (now comes the advice from an old man)- there will come a day for us all when we will have to accept help from someone else (whether we like it or not). So, if you're ever in a position to receive from younger family members, take it as an indication that it is time to start practicing "accepting".
That's my opinion and you're entitled to it.
