“The Greeley Grizzler”

Since: Jul 11

#1 Jun 2, 2012
D-Day June 6th 1944.
"Earn this, earn it".
These ofcourse are the last words uttered by Captain Miller (portrayed by Tom Hanks) to Private Ryan (played by Matt Damon) in the movie "Saving Private Ryan".
Anyone who has ever seen this movie would still be haunted by the great and terrible sacrifice given by Allied Forces during the invasion to liberate France, the largest amphibious invasion in history which cost the lives of 12,000 Allied Airforce Personnel as well as 19,000 civilians (bombs weren't smart then) on the day before the landing.
On D-Day (it is still only an estimation) 2,500 American and 3,000 Allied Forces may have been killed in a single day.
Not so long ago, TV anchorman Tom Brokaw called this "The Greatest Generation" which may or may not be true. The truth of the matter is, each generation looks back to its Heroes as "The Greatest Generation".
At present, men and women from many nations stand guard and, when necessary, fight to continue the great battle against oppression and tyranny around the world. These men and women do this (out of a voluntary nature mind you) to ensure that freedom and peace, rather than terror, reign supreme. I am sure that those present at Normandy (and still living) would point to these young people as the next "Greatest Generation".
To those who lost their loved ones on June 6th 1944 and to those whom have faced loss in this generation as well, we (a greatful nation) repeat these words of condolence:
"I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the Altar of Freedom" Abraham Lincoln - a Beacon of Light from another "Greatest Generation".
