It's the youngest of the Great Grand Grizzlers first birthday in about a week, and we know through the grapevine (his mother sent us an e-mail) that he likes Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. So...off to the mega-department stores Gladys and I went to find his present. Being a man, I went right to the Cars section and proceeded to pick up the largest, most expensive version of Lightning (complete with push button voice activation and lights) off of the shelf.
Now I don't know where she went, or how she did it, but after sometime, Gladys (for whom I had conducted an aisle-by-asile search) turned up with a small Lightning McQueen Lego set (3 or 4 very large pieces) that he and his dad could do together, and a book of only a few (very thick) pages about some car that cheated in a race, only to find that Lightning (who played fair) won the day. "Huh", I thought to myself "age appropriate with a moral, and family togetherness". I had to admit (begrudgingly) that she had shopped more wisely while I had rushed to the first thing that grabed my attention.
We men are like this. We are excited by colors, bells, whistles and the workings of it all. Many times I've found myself drawn out of the house by the exciting sounds of jackhammers, backhoes, and other heavy equipment, only to look around and see half of the men on the block staring (trance like) into a hole in the street as though we expected the workmen to raise Solomon's treasure at any moment. Gladys says she has never seen grown men act more like a bunch of little boys than when workmen come to our block. She says that men (I think she really means males) just can't resist the sights and sounds of machinery in action.
And so the littlest Great Grand Grizzler will (this year anyway) get colorful (yet educational) family and moral oriented gifts of good ol' Lightning McQueen. To be completely honest though, I'd love to have that nice big red car tell me "I really missed you" everytime (well every forth time) I pushed it's button. That would make me feel special.
That's my opinion anyway and you're entitled to it.
