Has anyone else heard that the days missed from the ice/snow has been approved by the Gov., but that it's up to the school board now and that they will prob not approve them because they will loose to much money? So here is my thing, It's fine to take the spring break, but they need to approve those days, it would be diffrent if we where not in a STATE OF EMERGENCY!! If needed tack on 30 min every day if they have to, but don't make them go all the way up in the middle of June! If you know any REAL/TRUE info please post!! Thanks

They can't accept those days because they still have to pay the teacher's and support staff's salaries because they are on contract to get paid so many days. If the kids don't attend school for those days, they don't get any money from the state, which means no money to pay salaries. They don't get any money by tacking on 30 min every day. If they don't miss any more, they will get out on June 9th. (That date is setting without taking away spring break, if they take away spring break they will get out sooner.)

They also have to pay the supertindent(Darlene Gee), she got to remember she come first.
And she like money and to entertain.
People on this site don't want to hear the real Darlene Gee.

It is bull that we don't get out until the 9th there is no reason for it!!! They did approve 10 day's that we would not have to make up, but they are saying that the Carter Co district scores are to low that is why we aren't going to get those day's, that is a crock of crap as well. These kid's spend enough time in school the way it is if they can't teach these kid's in 10mos which is how long they usually go, they don't need to be there. They expect to much out of these little ones they want them to be walking computer's it is no wonder the drop out rate is so high in this area! What these kid's so in 5th and 6th grade we didn't do until 8th. What is sad they want to focus on so many different things and they need to go back to the basics. They want these kid's to learn all of this math, well they need to teach them to read first if they can't read they can't do math, due to the reading problems. It is just crazy, I am so ready to home school mine at least they would get the one on one they need and wouldn't have to put up with the bull from the system!!! What else get's me is they stay on us about our kid's missing but I grant you if the teacher's want a vacation during the school year they will get it and won't have to worry about being took to court. The system is a big joke. We should not have to go back until after Labor Day and get out early May. As for the fall and spring break the fall break is a waste, it is what a month be for Thanksgiving? Why not keep their fall break and use it in case we miss school, and spring break is the same we get it a month and a half be for summer break and it always rain's any way so our kid's don't get to enjoy it. They need to keep them and let us out for summer earlier and not have to go back so soon. The parent's in this area need to take a stand and get some thing done!!!!

the last day for carter county is may 21st & they will not have to make up the days missed by the ice storm. I know they are getting 2 days og their sprink break, the rest is going towards making up the days before they missed for the ice storm.

It has been all over the radio and Grayson cable for the past three day's that it was approved for us to get 10 day's for the bad storms, but they are still saying that Carter Co isn't going to get them. It depends on what the school board in this area decides and they say our test scores are to low. According to the radio they have also said our last day of classes were up to June 9th unless any more day's are missed or unless they give us our day's. So any way you look at it we have day's to make up!!!

Trust me there are so many out there that wish they could home school! Unfortunately it is not that easy. There is some really good teachers out there but they are few and far between and trust me I have had both the good and the bad! Let me guess (aaa) you are one of these parent's who wish their kid's went to school all year round?

I am not I love spending time with my kid's and love to be able to take them places and raise them myself instead of some one else raising them for me. That is why I became a mom! The system is a joke there need's to be so many thing's changed it is not even funny. These teachers are put in a position that they can't do any thing about, they need more help!!! Just like our bus drivers need help, they let all their help go and now it is a mess. You can not expect one teacher to be able to give each kid individual attn they need when there are 30 kid's in a class. Not every child can understand things in the same way and some times they need more help, and they can't get it. If your child is one that doesn't need any help then great but there is so many that does and are falling behind because of our school system.

It is the kids who can actually learn the material who are getting screwed. The teachers teach to the test at the end of the year and if there is a kid who is slow it drags the whole class down. Money needs to be spent on remedial classes so that the kids who can learn at a normal pace don't waste their time going over the same simple lesson for days on end.

When my children and I moved here, please excuse the way I put this but they were dumbed down. My oldest child did in 5th grade what they were teacing in the 8th grade which was the grade she was in when we moved here. Our Country's children as a whole are being dumbed down and that scares me for our Country's future. Not enough emphasis nor value is being placed on our childrenchers taking's educations. These tests they take are a joke. Why aren't the Teachers taking tests? In Austrailia a Teacher's base salary is $100,000. Do you know why? Because the Teacher's classes are monitored, along with their lesson plans and they are required to have a certain percentage of students that are required to graduate. The Teachers there are tested annually to keep their teaching licenses because there they value education. They know everyone's not going to make the NFL or the NBA or be a movie star. They know they are teaching the future leaders of their country and they act as such. Our teachers are put in an impossible position by having to teach 30 children at a time, when they still need further schooling themselves. My daughter graduates this year, she's already a soldier in the Army Reserves and she leaves June 29th for MEPS and June 30th for basic training, then AIT, then her specialized training. I will not be able to see her for 7 months and they are worried about 10 days that aren't going to make a bit of difference. Wake up Parents! It's time we take a stand on several issues, not just 1. United we stand, divided we fall.

There is an excellent series of books available called "What your X grader needs to know." There is a book for each grade from kindergarten through 8th grade that I have seen, maybe through high school.

It is pretty eye opening to get one of those books for your child and to see what kids are being taught in the best school districts in the nation. Our kids aren't getting a fifth grade education and are graduating from high school. I have a copy of the book for my child's age and it is frustrating. I teach my child to the level in the book and he goes to school to be bored by 2+2=4 for the bulk of his 2nd grade year.

Are you kidding me? It is the kid's who need help and getting screwed!!! That is what we send our kid's to school for is to be taught and they are not getting it because our teachers need help. One person can only do so much. It is not a waste of time going over the same lesson at all, why should the kid's who need help fall through the cracks? They shouldn't, if your child is that bored then move them up a grade. If your kid is that smart they shouldn't need help any way rite?

That kill's me when people say that crap. These kid's all need to be treated equally no matter what. They are there to learn just like the rest of the kid's. No child learns at the same pace some need to write stuff down others learn by reading then you have those who are more hand's on. Both of my kid's were talking by the time they were 6mos old and walking by 9mos. My oldest can take a motor cycle apart at age 11 and put it back together. But when it comes to school they do have trouble in some subjects. Why should the be singled out because they struggle? They shouldn't at all, some kid's just need a little extra help.

Okay let's say you are on a new job, and you need this job in the worst way, there is some thing you don't understand what are you going to do? I know what you are going to ask for help rite? Okay now seeing how you dont understand some thing they are going to fire you from this job because there is one thing you don't understand. This is the same thing as our kid's being pulled out of a class room because they don't understand. They to need this education just as much as any other and it is all new to them as well.

As we are raising our kid's and preparing them to go to school we do teach them thing's but it is not what they would learn in a class room. I would love to be able to home school my kid's but in today's teaching by the time my kid got in 9th grade he or she will have already been working on what I didn't learn till I was a senior then what. They will be three grades ahead of me. So it is not as easy as it sounds. What it all comes down to is all our kid's need help, don't punish one with out the other. Some may not need the help and then some may, get these teachers the help to be able to teach all of our kid's stop letting them fall through the crack's as they do.

Please.... that is your opinion! Now before anyone gets upset allow me to explain! YES, there are some very good teachers in Carter County I will not debate that, but not all are the best! When teachers are allowed to sit in class and be on Myspace and Facebook there is a problem! Why is this allowed? It doesn't matter if they are on break or in class, they should be teaching! Maybe the board needs to be LOOKING INTO why the test scores are so low?!?!?!? Bottom line is that in Cater County students are not "PUT FIRST". I do not put all of the blame on the teachers here! It's about money, test scores, and appeasing the right people. This is my opinion!! I would love to homeschool my kids, but why should I have to? In school all you hear about are fights, and drugs. Yeah, we had little issues when I was in school but, not like it is now. AGAIN ALL OF THIS IS MY OPINION!

If you teach to the dumbest kid in the class you will have a class full of dummys by the end of the semester. If the child doesn't understand math and is slowing the rest of the class down then they need pulled out and taught separately so that they get what they need without penalizing the rest of the class.

If you know your child is having trouble with a subject then it is your responsibility as a parent to tutor them at home. You are correct that a teacher can not possibly teach all the students individually so you should be there to pick up the slack for your child. The school system is overburdened in this county, we all know it, don't drag it down further by expecting the teachers to work miracles.

I could not agree more!! Many parents today don't realize that they are responsible, ultimately, for their children s education. School to some, is just a day care.

That is bull S%#t and you know it! This if you teach the dumbest kid in class you will have a class full of dummy's, I have never herd any such bull in my life. No we don't expect a miracle but we expect or kid's to get an education after all is that not what we send our kid's to school for? If not than why in the heck do we need teachers or school for that matter. As for penalizing the kid's in class, what the heck is it going to hurt if the kid's are doing class work among them self if a child ask the teacher for help? It doesn't and it shouldn't affect your child at all after all they know it already any way rite?

For your info there are a heck of a lot of parents that do help their kid's and I am one of them. I do help my child and I did go the extra step and hire a tutor to ensure that my child get's the help they need! Also they don't work on the same thing over and over again it is called a chapter, it doesn't work that way at all it is either they get it or they don't and they move on. The whole jerking a kid out of class to get the so called extra help, why should I do that? The ones that do those classes are nothing but volunteers and the don't have a teaching degree they can't do any more than what I can do at home, it falls back to why have school if they are not being taught by a teacher.

You know what I was one of the kid's that struggled all through school and there were many that made all A's but do you know what they are no better off than me. I may have been one of the ones that made the bad grades and struggled but my husband and I both have good job's and a beautiful home and travel and spend time with our kid's. In the end it doesn't matter if a kid made all A's or F's we can't decide what are kid's do all we can do is pray. Yes we all hope our kid's make some thing of them self but it doesn't always work that way.
What needs to happen is they need to hire more teachers so they can make the classes smaller so all of our kid's get the help they need. There should never be any difference made in a child and a good teacher doesn't make a difference they are there to teach our kid's and they actually do care and there is just as many who could care less about our kid's. All kid's need to be taught and your child is no better than mine, they both deserve the same respect and treatment as all children do.

By the way there are NO dumb kid's they are all bright loved children who do not deserve to be treated any different than any other child.
