Any other parents out there concerned about the overcrowding on Johnson City school buses at SHHS? I have two students at SHHS and they are sitting three to a seat every day. These are not small children, but practically adults. Students are literally hanging out into the aisles. Are there any maximum occupancy laws being broken here?

For high school age students, school buses are designed to safely transport students with 2 in each seat. If they are sitting with legs in the aisles, then that is unsafe. No part of the body should be in the aisle.

Well drive your kids to school. I swear, people will find any reason to complain.

And I swear, some people will find any reason to be rude. I simply asked if there were any other concerned parents out there. Obviously, you are not one. I would like to hear from people who have something worthwhile to contribute on the actual subject. If it does not concern you, please refrain from commenting.

They actually encourage parents to not take children to the school due to the amount of traffic already there. I think it is a legitimate concern as well. My children had to ride four to a seat the first day of school and waited over an hour to get on the bus after school was let out.

We don't go to JC Schools, but I thought I heard their bus lot got flooded? Weren't there damages & they even had to start late this year? I can't remember for sure, but I think I remember reading a statement they put out about the transportation being affected and be patient blah blah blah.
I hope that's it, overcrowded buses are scary.

yes my grandson goes to Indain trail this year and he has to ride the bus an hour earlier this year because of picking up n dropping off at Liberty Bell and SHHS i know it is a long ride to Indian Trail .I do not understand why Fairmont had to just start from K-4th this year that may be another reason for overcrowed buses. And we were also asked not to bring the kids to school to let them ride the bus because of the traffic, but if this keeps up i think i will chance the traffic then to worry about the safety of the kids on those overcrowed buses

Even if a bus is overcrowded, it is still the safest vehicle on the rode. My guess is that with the flooding they are short on the number of buses they have available for a little while. Plus, it takes about a week to adjust the routes and eliminate over crowding. I think it will all straighten out by the end of this week.

Hopefully it will straighten out within a couple of weeks. For now, I guess I will just drive my children. I have done a lot of research online regarding bus safety and maximum occupancy. Kids are only afforded the protection of the thick cushioned bus seats if they are actually in a seat and not in the aisle. Unfortunately, with three or even four to a seat, that is simply not the case. Hopefully, Johnson City will take action to correct this on their own. If not, perhaps the parents need to get together and demand that they take action.

Have you called to report it? Squeaky wheel gets the grease. I understand about the seats. It's called compartmentalization. Has to do with the spacing of the seats and the height of the seat back. I am sure they will fix the problem. Still, the bus is safer than your car simply due to the size of the vehicle and the warning systems that are in place. Again, I would call them every day until they solve the problem.

I think you might be right. I guess I will wait and see what happens this week and go from there. I just hate to be "that parent" that calls to complain.

Odds are you won't be the only one. If the word of the overcrowding is not being passed on by the schools to the main office, they may not even know it's happening.

my name is lashaun I ride the bus in Washington county I recently entered high school. Our bus has been overcrowded for years so I've been told. I had to sit in the aisle today because every seat was full some seats were three to a people. Today I feared for my safety as riding to NHHS. This is ridiculous and the school wants to add another stop. Other days kids have to stand or sit on the floor.

Maybe they can put a rack on top of the bus and have room for more kids. That would save taxpayers some money. We could use ropes for seat belts to hold the kids in place on the roof.

Stop having children if you can't afford to drive them to school? Just my opinion. Take it or leave it. Honestly, with the reputation of east Tennessee school systems and their transportation, I wonder how people let their children ride the bus to these schools.
