This story is absurd. Brown recluse spiders do NOT live in Pennsylvania. As many as 80% of the conditions diagnosed as brown recluse bites turn out to be something entirely different. There is a wealth of medical literature regarding the misdiagnosis of brown recluse spider bites by physicians. Nobody in this story even saw a spider; without identification of a spider, the bite cannot be confirmed. This reporter has only added to the hype by reporting this story this way. She does not mention that the vast majority of brown recluse bites heal completely without intervention. Serious bites are extremely rare, even in places where brown recluse DO live.
I seriously hope this town council does NOT waste taxpayer money spraying a park for a spider that doesn't exist. Debbie Guide to Insects, About.com http://insects.about.com |

Well i just happen to be the kid that was bit. and after the reporter and camera man left i took a closer look at my shoe to make sure i didn't miss anything. and there WAS a spider inside my shoe and it was a brown recluse. just because they don't live in pennsylvania doesn't mean they can't be transported by trailers from trucks out of state, and i have NEVER seen a brown recluse bite heal by itself without an intervention. so my suggestion to you is don't think aloud until you swallow
