Most of the people who immigrated here originally spoke English. Over the next hundred years the other immigrants who spoke German, French, Spanish (from Spain), etc. learned English. They managed to learn it just fine and assimilated into the country instead of expected the country to cater to their needs and language. There is nothing racist or stupid about this. Most students learn a foreign language. The topic here is being forced to learn a particular one only. The student in the story is learning French, she just did not want to be forced to learn Spanish.
<quoted text>
... Dude the "TOPIX" is the...Grapevine-Colleyville school district and the requirement the school district has set! That is the topic; all the rest is just b.s. IF she doesn't like the Grapevine-Colleyville school district she is free to leave or go to a private school. OR she can run for a place on the Grapevine-Colleyville school district.

...Have your wife teach you to punctuate before posting comments, please. The topic is the Grapevine-Colleyville school district requirements for a second language. Can you guess the FIRST language they teach?

Here's what i don't understand. Anything you learn is only going to help you. And if I have the chance to learn something that I didn't know before, by all means, sign me up. I would be a career student if I had the chance. I don't know why everyone is getting so red about "Having" to learn a foreign language. Now I hate wet backs as much as the next guy, but they are here whether we like it or not. Now if I'm sitting in a McDonalds and this thug next to me is talking about shooting up the place in spanish in the next 2 minutes, I want to be able to understand that so I can ease on out the door and talk about it later. Doesn't mean I condone them being here. Just means that information is power and he who has more information wins.

So, to the woman that is making a stand against the class, I applaude your willingness to take a stand, just don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

Bet ya'll weren't expecting that were ya. LOL

If you want to hate people hate people that hire them because they dont want to pay the wages your asking for. I use to work at the Embassysuites in dallas and all the suite keepers were mexicans that got paid four dollars a room and only had 20 min to clean it. So when other people like white or black that got hired they didnt even last a day. further most Im an hispanic american that was born and raised here I dont think that they should make it mandatoury to learn spanish. We are just givng our rights up to every race that come over here and cry about thier rights being violated at the same time if they were in china, mexico, where ever they wouldnt be crying like they do over here. That pisses me off. I come from a long line of military family thats been in wars some even losins their lifes. For what to let people come over here and try to change what has been since our four fathers.

I'm beginning to like the sound of this Republic of Texas thing a little more every day. We could oust the scum to the USA, where they will take anyone, then build the ultimate country. We could have the blacks to pick our cotton and clean our mansions, the mexicans to pick our fruit, and if either one gets out of line, throw them in the wood chipper. We could take Jefferie's women from the polygamist compound. Well, we have to see how they clean up first :-) We could manufacture weapons and sell them to the criminals in the USA, build a toll road between USA and Mexico. Use the proceeds to build a concrete wall around the state, and dare anyone to come in uninvited.

I agree with you 100 and 10% We are in the United States, and the state of Texas. Our language is English. I've noticed so many Hispanics come here and still can't learn English, that burns me up. I feel that it should be a persons choice to speak what language they choose to speak, and be not forced to speak Spanish. However, I feel each Hispanic shouldn't be here if they can't speak English, or be forced to take lessons to speak our language. If not learned then go back to your native country.
RuckerCountry wrote:
This is getting ridiculous.
This is America. We speak English here. Yes, Texas is close to Mexico, but that doesn't mean anything. This is not Mexico. Just like the folks living in Minnesota or North Dakota don't need to learn French just because they live near Canada.
If you want to work here, you need to speak the language here, and that language is English. Just like if you were going to go to Japan, you'd need to speak Japanese, or Germany, you'd need to speak German. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with logic.
I hope these people file a law suit. Foreign language classes are mandatory in most schools, but at least you get to PICK which language you want to learn. You can't force someone to learn a language because you think that's the language they should learn, regardless of whether you believe it's in their best interest or not.

This is obviously a sore subject!

Guess only offering Russian during the cold war would have caused a similar verbal eruption.

Politics aside, I'd be happy if they could just manage to teach our little Texans ENGLISH, math, science, etc.(Grin)

But realistically, if your offspring are headed for college, they will need to at least dabble in a watered down second language class of some sort before they get out of high school. The real trouble with teaching a foreign language is that you MUST have a good working knowledge of English grammar first. Makes it much easier to learn the next language because you have a real frame of reference.

Don't know why the school only offered one language, though. That's hardly acceptable for educational purposes--that's the modern do it cheap kind of thinking that leaves our kids the "dumbest" in the world by rank. You'd think they would invest in some of the newest software our there--so many languages available to learn at the child's own pace with an instructor on standby.

Also, one might note that many Americans associate the Spanish language with those who come here illegally as criminals, drug runners, etc. They don't want little Sally and Johnnie to start speaking a base "barrio" gutter language they don't understand or approve of. You can hardly fault them for that.

This is going on in every school in the country.
It's called "World Language" (must mean Third World!)
Big Brother wants your kids to speak spanish & you have the right to remain silent.
There is no choice in another language, or a way to opt out.
I'm amazed that there is no national petition to stop this.

To the poster who asked "When did we dummy down?"
Do you REALLY think it benefits US to learn a Third World language?

They should have to learn English like the 99% of all other immigrants who came here.

Don't like it? Let me show you the exit.
