121 construction

What are the plans for all the recent construction on 121 in front of Grapevine Mills Mall? Are they extending the toll road? Are they putting in wider lanes? Over-passes so there are no lights? What is the schedule for this to be complete? Are there alternative routes behind the mall to get to Hwy 20?

Thanks, chuck...

Good question. That stretch is a mess. Here's a link to some information:

Chuck, I'm not sure where you are traveling to or from, but if it's from Frisco to hwy 20 west maybe try 35E to 161 to 183 to 360. Hwy 161 is toll, but it's much faster than 121 from Lewisville to Grapevine.

Thanks, I meant Hwy 26.

I found George Bush tollroad to be a little faster but not much becuase there is a ton of traffic on N. Dallas tollroad.

I live in The Colony and drive to North Arlington on my commute- between the new 121 Tollroad and now this Grapevine mess...I spend alot of time doin the creepy crawl!(any suggestions of a different route that you know might be quicker would muchly be appreciated)

Maybe try Denton Tap South from 121 to Bethel road West. Bethel road changes to Bass Pro drive and merges again with Northwest highway just past Grapevine Mills Mall. It's slightly out of the way, but at least you'll be moving.

I found out this stretch of road is not part of the DFW connector, but it will tie into it. I spoke to the project manager and I was told the goal of the project is to eliminate stopping for N/S bound traffic on 121. They are going to first widen the frontage roads to 3 lanes (they've begun) and when that is done, close down the existing highway so that they can put in two bridges - one at sandy lake, and one at freeport. The bridges will be N/S bound and the E/W will use the existing lights to cross under the bridges. TXDOT is aiming to finish the project by October 2008.
