Well, this is another "Feel Good" story.

I am happy to hear Pollard is making some progress in Tourism - because she certainly has done NOTHING in terms of her second role - improving communications between the County, its commissioners, and its citizens.

You sure got some work to do there, Janet!

LOL

Can the PO interview one of these "tourist"? I wouldn't walk across the street to watch cheese age or look at holes in a basement that may be traced to the underground railroad. "I'm so excited. Next week end we are planning to visit and tour Franklin County. I can't wait to see the orchards and to read the sign in front of the house where John Brown lived and to see the possible sights where the underground railroad might have stopped. Will next weekend ever come? I can hardly wait. Just think, we can plan 66 more trips to PA to tour all of the counties!"

Anything to substitute for getting some real jobs here. With gas approaching $4 / gal. I can think of no better idea than to try to get folks to run around more in their unaffordable, polluting cars.
Face it. Gettysburg has serious history and is a natural tourist attraction. Chambersburg has some history and some of it is interesting. But, is on a par with most towns.
More government fiddling around pretending they are doing something to distract folks from the fact that they are doing little to nothing.

Once again, the cheerful people who always have something nice to say. They have all the answers but no leadership positions to make them come true. Is anything ever right for you folks?

Why would the underground railroad be of no interest to you?

I do not believe that this "second role" is what the mission statement for the FCVB says.

So people spent $359 Million dollars in FRANKLIN COUNTY in 2005 on tourism....think maybe that was for all of PA?? Great writing, once again.

Time after time, we see this figure of $359M cited in stories about tourism in Franklin County, yet it's never really sourced (or at least never explained how the figure is arrived at). There is NO WAY tourists are spending $359M/year in Franklin County. It's absolutely absurd. As far as the "second role" -- when the position was originally created, part of the job was some type of PR responsibilities for the commissioners too.

Check out what is happening in the next county of Cumberland. Shippensburg has a civil war event the last week in June. Go to our website at http://www.marchtodestiny.com and see if it will be of interest to your readers and visitors.

Thanks Adam (webmaster)

As a newer resident of Chambersburg, I notice two things, The ones that have been born and raised here neither appreciate what they have today nor appreciate the heritage of the past.
In Chanbersburg, I called a city official about a problem with the road in front of my property on a Friday afternoon. On Monday a man came out to inspect the condition and it was corrected on Thursday. When I lived in New Jersey, I paid more then four times more in property taxes. I informed the responsible people about a safety issue for school children by my house. Six weeks later I received a letter from an unknown face telling me that the condition had been investigated and needed to be corrected and would be when other work was scheduled in the area. Fourteen years later (three months before I moved) the condition was corrected. and yet I hear complaining about our town workers.
We have a great place hear to attract tourist. I do not believe that it is fully exploited, but neither was Gettysburg exploited as much in the early years and for a few years Gettysburg was over exploited. Lets cooperate with those in tourism to exploit what we have to offer and not to become so greedy for the tourist dollar that we ruin what we have. The idea of regional tourism must remain open since Adams county to our East and Huntington, Bedford, Blair, and Cambria Counties to our West offer some of what could be the greatest natural and historical tourist attractions in this section of the nation. Mix that in with the Cumberland, Your, Lancaster, Dauphin Counties attractions and Franklin County could well be a tourist mecca.

I was just up there this summer--- Gettysburg, Chambersburg, all over that region. Stayed at an amazing bed and breakfast on Philadelphia Avenue downtown. It's a beautiful part of the country. My wife's family is from York, and mine is from DC. I'll tell you, for someone who has lived in the city/suburbs all of his life, it really is a nice place to get away. I'm a history buff, so I guess that makes me a bit biased.

Karl,

You're right, these people here don't realize the amount of history here. There's more to history than just events that movies are made about. I love Gettysburg, Sharpsburg, Harper's Ferry and Manassas; but Forts' Loudon & McCord played a big role in the expansion of our country. Read a little...do we got problem's sure, but it could be worse!
