Interstate 81, a troubled highway: Rigs transport more than legal goods

Dark side of the highway: In February 2010, six large wooden crates containing more than 6,500 pounds of marijuana with a street value of $25 million was found on a tractor-trailer traveling on I-81. The bust - among the largest single seizures of marijuana in the states history - was one of many that occur each year along I-81. From the outside, ... Full Story

umm, mayor pete, do you live in the same town i do?? are you honestly saying I-81 is not adding crime? are you also saying adding warehouses and truck depots are not and will not add crime because we're a small town? look at york and carlisle. they are further along the path we are on. that's our future. but no one cares because it brings jobs (low-paying, but jobs), and most importantly, it enables the sale of massive amounts of real estate in this economy.

Hats off to the State Police, as well as town police. Get the bad eggs off the road and keep the drugs and prositution out of our country. What I didnt see in this article was the statistics for cars being pulled over and the drugs being found in them.

Yes, Carlisle is a bad place for illegal problems. I guess I would suggest the police working with the major occupents (Truckers, motels, and truck stops) on getting this under control. You will find that most truck drivers dont want this out their and have families of their own. They just want a safe a decent place to sleep for the night as well as a hot shower and good meal. Set up a report line just for this. Make it anonomous. I know alot of the peope that work in that area and have have the need in the past to use the facilities and I would have loved to have had a phone number to call with suspicious activity without the need for 10 cop cars pulling in on just a hunch. Just listening to the CB is evidence of what goes on, but only about 5% of the truckers are actually involved and with that 5% it gives the rest of them a bad name. I know many truckers that will only stop in this area if there is no other way beacuse of the problems (drug, theft, prositution).

In a good note, over the years it has gotten a little better. There arent as many knocks on your door at night. The local police force presence has made a dent and what is there seems to went way underground, but it is still there.

Bring this information to the attention of our Chamber of Commerce and FCADC! They have been the big backers of bringing in mega sized warehouses that employ 200-300 people at most, destroy farmland and attract this kind of negative activity. Franklin County is too precious, the future or our children too valuable, and the quality of our lives too important to be subjected to this kind of nonsense on a daily basis. We need real businesses, with real jobs and good wages; not a boondogle that only enriches a few like the land owners and trucking companies.

How many more lives have to be ruined by marijuana PROHIBITION before We The People step up and legalize it? Virtually all the problems attributed to marijuana are actually problems directly and completely caused by marijuana PROHIBITION!

Want your freedom back? Legalize marijuana! That will take away Uncle "Sham's" most common excuse to trash the Constitution and pretend like the Government is protecting you from yourself over a plant that has never killed anyone of any age in all of recorded history anywhere on planet earth!

Why is the most useful plant known illegal? It's illegal because corporations that buy politicians fear competition from superior, safer and more environmentally friendly hemp products and because the Government loves to oppress jail and steal from the people! Alcohol, tobacco, petroleum, cotton, timber, chemical and pharmaceutical companies, just to name a few all see marijuana as unwanted competition.

But "what about the kids"? Marijuana prohibition does not keep kids from using marijuana! Illegal dealers don't ask for ID! Would you rather have your kid locked up with killers and child molesters, or would you prefer to do your own parenting? Do you really believe an arrest record on a drug charge that will follow them for life and possibly a criminal conviction record on a drug charge that will follow them for life is going to help little Mary and little Johnny be stellar successful citizens?

But "what about marijuana causing car wrecks"? http://peaceandloveism.com/forums/index.php...
Google MARIJUANA DRIVING STUDY. You'll see 2 common findings:
1. Drivers under the influence of marijuana are VERY SLIGHTLY impaired.
2. Unlike those under the influence of alcohol, marijuana consumers are aware they are SLIGHTLY impaired and they CONSISTENTLY ADEQUATELY COMPENSATE by slowing down a little and being a little more cautious. That doesn't mean they get in the fast lane on the interstate and drive 15 miles per hour. Marijuana makes you cautious, not crazy! Those Cheech and Chong movies were comedies, NOT documentaries!

http://www.jackherer.com/thebook/chapter-four...
"In the 1920s and 30s, Hearst's newspapers DELIBERATELY MANUFACTURED a new threat to America and a new yellow journalism campaign to have hemp outlawed. For example, a story of a car accident in which a marijuana cigarette was found would dominate the headlines for weeks, while alcohol-related car accidents (which outnumbered marijuana-connected accidents by more than 10,000 to 1) made only the back pages. This same theme of marijuana leading to car accidents was burned into the minds of Americans over and over again..."

Marijuana does not cause aggressive behavior. Marijuana does not cause dangerous driving. Marijuana does not cause cancer, brain damage or any serious health problems. Marijuana prohibition does not keep kids away from marijuana. Marijuana is not a "gateway drug", there is absolutely NOTHING about marijuana that causes people to use other drugs. Marijuana is not addictive. In fact marijuana is one of the safest substances known! Marijuana is SAFER than many foods we consume all the time and give to our kids. Exactly what good is this prohibition doing and who is benefiting from it?

THE LAWS PROHIBITING MARIJUANA ARE NOT A RESULT OF ANY HARM FROM MARIJUANA. THEY ARE THE RESULT OF LIES, GREED AND RACISM. Read the well documented proof of that and a lot more marijuana TRUTH in these two articles: "MARIJUANA AND HEMP THE UNTOLD STORY, Thomas J. Bouril" and "WHY IS MARIJUANA ILLEGAL, Pete Guither", click the links to those articles on this webpage:

I guess you are one of these people that think the more resturants and stores we put up the better?? I wish the Chamber of Commerce and the FCADC would be able to have more oppertunities to help new product based businesses (this means more warehouses and factories) so that we as a nation can stop importing as much and start exporting more. Become more independent. From your post I can tell this will be lost on you. You might hate the growth in the immediate area, but tell that to your kids and grandkids when they are looking for a decent job and they can't find one in the area and are forced to move 2 or states away. How is that for keeping with the old time values???

Let's bring GOOD business to the area and GOOD people.

I'm really not understanding how this is different from any other highway. It seems to me that it really isn't news at all. Looking for something to write P.O.? I'm sure there had to be some sort of real news out there to write about. I guess it's only news if it has something to do with death and illegal (drugs...etc.).

why is it that it always seems to be heard when a truck has carried drugs or more into a community but when its a citizen in a car or pick up no big deal is made?? always someone looking to bash a truck driver, who brings your food and clothes to you. not all of us are criminals but the news and papers somehow make us out to be.

This is good news. Now, if there were just a way to get the PSP to stop truckers for speeding. At times they appear truck blind.

Pot at 240 dollars a ounce. Are they crazy. Wish I had gotten 240 instead of the 35 a oz or 20 a half I use to get.
