OK. I know this flawed logic, but if the enrollment continues to increase every year, buoyed up by freshman enrollment, how is it that the high schools are doing such a horrible job of preparing students? OR, could it be that NMSU and other universities look the other way when it comes to academic standards, just to rake in the lottery scholarship moolah. If the universities weren't in the money making game, they would not take 100% of the students who can pay. Which is it? High schools are doing a bang-up job of sending students to college, or universities taking every warm body who can pay? BTW, I am aware some of this enrollment increase involves students returning to college after work, war, or bad decisions. But the vast majority are 18 year old freshmen.

There will be 28 jobs waiting for 28 thousand students! State is inundated with colleges and no jobs in New Mexico.

The standards to get in to NMSU are minimal. Many of these students would be better placed in a community college.

Yes, the enrollment is up at the beginning of the semester. Recheck the enrollment after the last day to withdraw, you will find a significant number change.

Yes, The recruiters do a fantastic job, but retention is a serious problem in many departments.

With the tuition increase, misc. institutional fees, departmental fees, price of books, freezing of the lottery scholarship, lack of jobs- you will see a decline in enrollment. This happens every year but NMSU always glosses over and/or ignores those facts.

If students "three r's" aren't up to speed, they are sent to the community college to get up to speed.
