It was inventoried by Eric S. Wilson in the summer of 1991 as part of
his Eagle Scout Project which included cleaning up other cemeteries
in the Granite City area.

The above was compiled by Mrs. Darlene Hatcher M. Kahn with the help of
Margaret Burns and Lillie (Brooks) Barber.
This Old Spanish Cemetery listed in Cemeteries and Tombstone Inscriptions of Madison County Illinois Volume 13 has to incorrect as these same people are listed in three different cemeteries in three different locations
1 OLD SPANISH CEMETERY Chouteau Township Section 34
2 EBENEZER RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY Nameoki Twp. Section 6, NW 1/4 of NW 1/4.
and 3 The ATKINS FAMILY CEMETERY Section 31 of Chouteau Township
(SW 1/4,SW 1/4,SE 1/4).

EBENEZER RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY and the ATKINS FAMILY CEMETERY are the same cemeteries they are listed with two different locations the correct location would be the inventory done by Mary Jane Gass, 6 Nov. 1982
Nameoki Twp. Section 6, NW 1/4 of NW 1/4. off of Sough road

March 31 2013 we went to visit this cemetery and it is in bad shape and hard to get in there are only a few stones left none standing found one buried.
If we can get people to help and permission from the owners I would like to do a clean up project of this cemetery if your interested in helping let me know

These different inventories were done in the same cemetery my questions are why did this young man think that it was called the Spanish Cemetery??? Was there ever a Spanish cemetery in this area ? We are so far unable to show from records anything about there ever being a Spanish Cemetery around here that I know of.
I do believe that there was an Old Spanish Cemetery and I think it was out on the island but I am unable to show this as fact

We called it Spanish Graveyard. It was all farmers fields back then; I'm talking 1974/75/76. I thought it was sad that the cemetery was so run down. I would have to drive out there now and see how much is still there. Odd Fellows may be the correct name; my brothers told me it was Spanish Graveyard... you know brothers. Anything to scare their little sister.

I worked for Chouteau Township years ago.... this wasn't part of it.. Granite City has its own township.. Im pretty sure this is part of it. Also This location is within the City of Granite City. Why would it be Chouteau Township... and its no where near Chouteau Island... is Walmart on Chouteau Island too?? Why does Granite City Police respond to calls from Walmart... Madison Co responds to calls for Chouteau Island and Chouteau Township... Im not sure where you got your info but it doesn't sound correct to me.

They didnt relocate graves you dummy... who told yout that... the grave yard is not that close to walmart that would require the moving of any of the graves. Wal Mart removeing graves to expand their empire would have made front page papers... People like you.. idiots like you are how rumors get started. In fact they re routed the road to keep people away from the grave yard... idiot.

Yes, they are my Gr-Gr-Gr Grandfather William J Emmert, his daughter Ruth Emmert Brown and husband John A. Brown. It was the Emmert Family Cemetery. I am trying to find a plot map that once existed if anyone knows about it. There are only 3 flat grave markers today that are hard to find, but if you know where they are you can see them. John A. Brown was wounded in the civil war in MO and at one time there was a large civil war statue in the cemetery that disappeared. If anyone would have a photo I would be interested in seeing it.
