I just don't think small business can be what it used to be.What is it that wal mart don't sale ,or you cant buy cheaper on the internet that could be sold down there? I have a 5000 sq foot building that I cant figure out what to use for that would be profitable. With all the overhead there,Id have to profit about $100 a day.

We need to get off the taxes because this has nothing to do with taxes or spending hundreds of dollars to play sports. What is needed is much more community services to promote the needs of our community as a citizen of G.C. and bring more options to our younger generations that are coming up. Taxes are already going towards streets and the up keep of G.C. We shouldn't make it a business or tax solution. We should make it a citizen and community solution. We as citizens of G.C. should make it a responsibilty as a community to keep our hometown as nice and safe as possible. Be proud and confident of where we live. It's not much work or to ask for from the people who live in it. Doesn't everyone want to live in a nice safe and secured environment? That sounds like the best motivation for anyone to want to pitch in and get involved into making their hometown they live in a better place to be.

Okay still we come up with some kind of a volunteer situation that can be ran by donations only. That way it wont touch anyone's taxes. There hasto be a way to help the future of this city.

You so called parents are about the dumbest and laziest people I have ever heard of, really? Get your children involved in programs as one of the post said, such as SPORTS, ARTS, YMCA, SCOUTS.... THIS SOOO ridiculous.... just laziness, my God!

When I was young as kids we were just happy to go outside and play in the neighborhood, soccer, corkball, pickup basketball, football, all summer long....

We would look forward to the small things, going fishing with our dads, grandpas, you people now days just go out and party have sex, breed then have NO PLANS on how to raise these little ones and expect free programs to raise your kids, really? God how pathetic!

Drugs and Criminal activity is the biggest problem and for decades now this city has went down worse by the year because of it. The worse thing that really happen here is that people just stopped caring and let it all get out of control. Why would people be so settled living in a drug and criminal invested area and become the most dangerous place to live. It's a shame.

Don't worry, CCW is coming. I personally will not be carrying. However, I'm hoping the knowledge that others around me might have a firearm will prevent criminals from leaving the house. Better yet, force them to move.

smdh, I could not agree with you more about this post. Parents do need to get involed more insted of being lazy & let them text on a phone. Also we got alot other stuff that need be issused. I like your idea's maybe you should talk to Mayor Ed & see what he thinks of these. Also, you are right about another thing we can change if people don't want to do nothing.

If the taxes pay for our police protection then the most simple and reasonable answer is for them to get more involved and get them off the streets and into rehab.

5000 sq foot buildings could be used for many things. Diaper partys, Baby showers, Wedding receptions, Benifits, Birthday parties, Family reunions.. Battle of the Bands, Graduation parties. People are always looking for affordable places to hold events.

From what I read almost daily about my beloved Granite City, they seem to be battling a lot of conflicts of what should be done. Maybe I am wrong, and probably I am. I was born in G.C. May 11, 21934, moved when I was 11 but have never, ever, have not stopped loving my hometown. Having moved in Sept 1945, to California, a lot changed after that of course. But in my old 79 year old mind, I have the dearest, most wonderful experiences of my beloved hometown, and I know soooo many chnges through the years, have been tough. I was visiting last Sseptember 2012, and was able to visit my last home I lived in at 2217 Cleveland, and many other places. DOwntown, was beautiful when I lived there. I wont bore you with all my old memories, but keep on getting it cleaned up, if possible restore, the old Neidringhaud Blvd, if possible. Some of the most attractive buildings, i.e. Grahams Bookstore and the apts, home across the street. i have many old picutres of the 1940's, and cherish them for the rest of my life.
