But, my favorite memry fromyes Washington School was the 6th grade bus trip to Salem and Springfield. I remembers those things too.

My brothers and I were there in the early 70s. We lived on Ohio. A block from triangle park. Rob and I were in the same class (k-1 in 75-77). Scott is older and was hurt in a car accident in 73; he was 8 then.

GC Kid wrote: Anybody remember the Hogue family, they were dirt poor and always came to school smelly and dirty everybody made fun of those poor kids. Hope life turned out okay for them. Granite City in the 70s now those were the days. This was a said showing of the small minds that are every ware. The Hogue family is related to me. They could not help how they were living they grew up with little money. Their parents had health issues that didn't allow them the same abilities we are blessed to have. They are all older then I, and I have been gone 30 years. What does it say about your mind that all you can say about them is they were smelly, if you had really cared you would have left that comment out. I know that some of them have done okay with such a hard struggle starting out, lot better then some who have no excuse. Others have had a very hard time and for you to judge them when you didn't even know them?? Who gave you that right? I feel sorry for those in your small tidy world if thats all you can come up about a child's life. I remember hanging out on the roof, well it was only maybe 5 ft high, but that was the place to be. I remember Michelle W., Rhonda B., Tammy W., Mike G., George H.,Danny D., Eric H., Tom P, Everett H., Mark M.,so many others... I remember they made the younger kids play on half the playground and the older kids play on the other half. It was marked off by a painted line. I would sit on one side and my little sister on the other holding hands..That was a big school for such little people, lol OHHHH, and who remembers that B++ch Mrs. Westerhold? I remember Green's penny candy. And Slims, they sold those little plastic monkey's that smoked fack cigs..haha, God I feel old Who and what do you all remember? I know you are out there. I recall slims and Greens and they still sell candy but its nickel and dime so I here. I recall hopscotch, tether ball. four square. I learned to knit in 6th grade and Mr. Svoboda, taught me the love of reading with cheaper by the dozen.

Missy wrote: Frank, I remember those cinders. They hurt if you fell down on them. I knew one of the students you named, and perhaps a younger sibling of another one. Remember the bookmobile parking on the side of the school, and how exciting it was to enter and get a book? Does anyone have any photographs of Washington School? i have some old ones

I remember the Hogue family they lived across the ally from us. I often wondered what ever happened to them all. Johny, Paul. I can't remember what the brother that was deaf's name was. They may have been poor but you didn't see those boys withou a smile on their faces. My mother used to get them Christmas trees at Christmas time and they were so thankful. I never went to washington I believe we moved there at the time of its closing and I went to Logan then for 4 th grade. Mrs Hagler/?(cant remember her married name) None of my teachers where any good. My fifth grade teacher did chest checks on us girls every day.. He was a pervert and staff just over looked it.

I have some of my Washinton School group photos and I am missing some names. The time frame is1959 through 1967. Was wondering if anyone on here go to Washington during that time frame or possibly a relative and would be interesting in looking at them to see if they recognize anyone. Thanks Chris Hoffman
