I lived in gc years ago. Married, moved away, came back. But it's like a bad nightmare! There are little thugs running around, drugs, violence...it's like I'm back in Los Angeles, only there are no good people to turn to for friendship!
What happened?!?!
I moved back, and it's like all the good people packed up and left all the undesirables behind. Surely there are still SOME people left here that are not...well, total lackwits??
Please tell me there is more in Granite then addicts breeding loser children with entitlement issues....that I've just not met them as of yet?
Perhaps it's the part of gc I'm living in?
Are there any GOOD people reading this???
(Good meaning clean, hardworking folk.)

It's almost like I walked into an alternate dimension. I have great memories of growing up here. Friendly neighbors. Good, hard working people. Yes, there was the occasional drunk neighbor or police raid I would hear about later, but what I see now, it's more like a movie plot where the world has ended and it's everyone for themselves.
I'm sad to say, I'm ashamed I accepted the transfer back here. I hope someone can change my mind and show me that it's not as bad as it appears. I don't want to live in a place that I hate. I want to be proud to live here.
Are there maybe some programs I can volunteer for? Some kind of community event(s) I can participate in ?

Simple. Jobs went away. Blacks and Hispanics moved in next to remaining low life whites. This causes problems for the schools and people moved driving down property values.

Add to that drugs, tatted up clowns and your answer is simple. The same thing that killed East St Louis then Venice and then Madison.
Just a matter of time before those kind of people destroy the rest of the town.

Thank the democrats who bought votes through patronage jobs and welfare. Pontoon Beach and Mitchell will fall in about 20 years. Collinsville, despite Hispanic gang problems may survive.

I left Granite City years ago moved back and left again, it was by far the best decision for me and my children that I could ever make. I tried to come back to the town that I remembered but it's not that place anymore. it's overrun with blacks Hispanics and white trash, who can't even pick up the trash out of their own yards let alone have any type of community programs! unless it's a rehab program because of all the halfway houses in that area it's declining more and more everyday. Granite is getting worse and worse by the day!!

Just like East St. Louis the Democrats have sucked the town dry. The politicians, business owners and school board members take their money and move to Edwardsville. It all started around 2005 ( or at least when I noticed it) the Madison schools failed so they started busing in all the coons then they inter grated the kids with behavioral issues into the regular classes then the meth epadimic of around 2008 now our schools are filled with the offspring of these meth head hoosiers even the kindergarten kids are horrible. All these Home investors who do not live in Granite are buying foreclosures slapping some paint and siding on them and getting the rent from HUD. So the hard working law abiding people have no choice but to move away because the politicians and school board do not care about the future of this city because they wont be here as long as they get their pensions. Look around how many new businesses are coming to granite? How many old businesses are struggling to keep their doors open? The only businesses sucseeding are the one who feed off the poor like dollar tree, family dollar, dollar general, title max, used car lots with 30% interest and how many bars does one town need?

The Army Depot closed and took thousands of jobs with it. Thanks to better equipment and kess demand, the steel mill needs far fewer people to operate than it did in the 50s. When Eisenhower started building and improving the interstates, the mill workers all moved out of town. Now, due to illegal Chinese, Korean, and, Indian dumping, the mill is pretty much shuttered. The loss of those two employers completely gutted the job base around here.

Alvin Fields Democrat party political machine killed East St Louis and the rest of the riverbend area.
Every time the mill tried to upgrade the unions would block it with the usual banter of worker safety issues
Illinois losers along with their aligned Democrats ran their jobs away
It's funny all in all
But have to admit the Democrats cared for their voting base after assuring the unemployed there would be food stamps after the jobs were ran away

You hit the nail on the head. It will only get worse. Working class families are making an exodus, while govt. entitled move into the HUD apartments and homes. The apartment complexes use to be higher scale, but not now.... I have lived here for ovet 50 years and watched the demise. When my retirement day comes, I am out!!!!

American steel pays low wages and hires a lot of rejects. It's not a good job, really. Prairie farms is a good job, but they don't employ that many people and you can't get hired there unless you are connected to someone already there. The last time they hired there were over 500 applications for two positions.

It is so sad and scary. My family was just woken by gun shots outside our house. I called the police which responsed quickly, but I wasn't trying too get shot and covered my kids as we ran into my bedroom. I hope they catch whoever did it. I also wish one of my neighbors seen something but they all just heard it. I don't get it I live on the last decent block in West Granite. No one is into drugs. What were they shooting? I'm lucky though our whole block our all close to one another. I feel the same as you. I'm working hard to get my family a house built on our property in bunker hill but it's not happening as fast as this town is going down.
