Government workers must be held to a higher standard and made accountable for their mistakes. Those in the private sector can be fined and even incarcerated for their mistakes.

There should be someway to make those involved personally responsible for their mistakes -- possibly deducting money from their retirement account to reimburse the taxpayers and start deducting premiums for malpractice insurance from all government workers pay. This way taxpayers aren't left holding the bill for government's negligence and incompetency.

And pray tell, where is the $20,000,000 going to come from considering the State of California is dead broke?

This is also a personal responsibility issue. Like teaching your children not to speak with strangers and how to resist their aggressive actions.

Another reason to disband Public Employee Unions.....they breed sloth as they have ZERO consequences for completely failing at their jobs.

So, what the hell is the State of California going to do without in order to pay this 20 million dollar extortion? How about extracting the money from the mother who obviously failed to tech her children well?

John did you actualy even read the story? Cause a mom may have not said something to a child like dont talk to stranges then her kid gets kidnapped. Thats like saying if someone in your family commits suicide you should get fined.

20 million!!!!!!!unless she was gonna be a male athlete, she never would have made that much in her life time. Get real, she deserves something, but not anywhere near 20 million.

I don't really give a crap! The mother was negligent and should be heavily fined. We the taxpaying public SHOULD NOT be extorted in paying Ms Dugard the 20 million bucks. Like everyone else, Dugard needs to work hard for her living and to support her rug rats - no ifs, ands or buts.

Mandatory sterilization for this criminal would have prevented all this.

Oh, but mandatory sterilization interferes with criminals' and other parasites' rights!

Eeeek!!

Perhaps mandatory sterilization for Dugard's mother would have been appropriate also.

Mandatory castration or hysterectomy should be in order to parents who show no responsibility toward their offspring.

You may be confusing sterilization with castration.

This will drastically take away from the welfare budget for those hard working Obama supporters, this is clearly discrimination.
