This place seems to attract the biggest bozos from both sides. I used to come here years ago but stopped and now I know why. Someone calling everyone Jason? Others claiming to take the high road but in reality are nothing but snakes slithering in the grass. You people should see yourselves through the eyes of an outsider and you would be ashamed. Just a few people on the fringes of the left and the right using multiple names to try and make your pitiful points. If you people really represent today's society we are really in trouble!

Yeah, it sort of mirrors the situation in Washington D.C. doesn't it?

Actually, the number of CRC members has gone down and there are more members of different protestant groups. But, since that won't fit in with your diatribe against GR, please continue. I do have one question though and it's the same question I ask people who appear to be terribly unhappy with the location they live in....why stay? No one is demanding you live here. For your own peace of mind, move someplace that will make you happy, if such a place exists.

With the exception of college abroad I've lived here my entire life and I would have to disagree with your assessment of GR. Over the last 20 years Grand Rapids has increased in population and diversity, as well as notoriety for being a more than accepting city for everyone from gays and lesbians to Latinos to artists to young professionals and families. Grand Rapids is known worldwide for ArtPrize and also for being a serious contender for Beer Capital, USA. It's also forged quite a reputation for world class medical treatment.

20 years ago we were know only for being a former furniture mecca and for having a CRC church on every corner. Young people were fleeing as fast as they could. Businesses were too. Downtown was a ghost town at night and on the weekends. Now it's a thriving, vibrant center of activity with bars, restaurants, art studios, concert and sporting events every single night.

Not sure what part of Grand Rapids you've been stuck in for the last 20 years but I suggest you get out and explore. You seem to be missing. well ... everything.

I am a member of the Christian Reformed Church. Why does everyone out there have such an inferiority complex that they want to keep picking on me? Sure we have some hypocrites in the CRC but come join us - there's room for more!

Not to rip on Grand Rapids too much here because that isn't what this topic is supposed to be about but...Grand Rapids lost about 1,000 people from 1990-2010 so it's not growing in population. The downtown has come a long way, mainly by getting people to move downtown and that has helped with the bar restaurant scene.

In a nut shell though Grand Rapids has become the showcase for Amway and the DeVos family. Downtown Grand Rapids looks good in a picture on an Amway brochure but how much of it is community related/driven? ArtPrize is the product of a bored billionaire's son who was able to dump millions into getting it started so they could draw attention to their nicely sculptured city. It may be known worldwide but how much respect it gets within the art community is up for debate. There are two upscale hotels downtown (one too many) that are both owned Amway that for the most part sit empty and have never, I repeat never, turned a profit. The only way these hotels are able to keep the power on is by the deep pockets of the owners, again part of the showcasing. Remember this is a city where Amway held fireworks downtown for Amway employees to enjoy and then had the balls to tell citizens not to come downtown to watch! Young people are still leaving (obviously---if the population is falling!) and young people from elsewhere are choosing not to move here, for various reasons and yes one of those reasons is the grasp that hardcore conservatism still holds on this area.

So as far as Grand Rapids goes, it is a nice town. It's nicely manicured and for the most part is family friendly. Sure there are worse places to live but before we start trumpeting it up as some up and coming metropolitan, cultured mecca lets take a step back a minute and see it for what it is. A nice, little town, bankrolled by a few individuals and dominated by the same political, and religious influence that has shaped it over the last 100 years. Which can only mean one thing, it will remain a nice little town, controlled by the same influences.

If you're ok with that, then ok. There's nothing wrong with being small. Most small to mid-sized cities in the rust belt are losing population as older people seek out warmer climates and younger people seek out more diverse surroundings.

It's not class envy. Do I wish I had my own town to build and develop like a real life SIMS game? Sure, I guess but I am happy just being a cog in the wheel.

No it's just an ip thing, changed internet providers.

Moving to Grand Rapids and then complaining about
the Dutch Reformed influence there is kind of like moving to Salt Lake City and complaining about Mormans.
The area was developed and continues to be developed by (in part) Dutch Reformed investors. The Christian Reformed Church is based here as is its college, drawing students nationally and internationally.
In short, don't go to Mc Donalds if you're looking for sushi.
