Jury deliberates in Walkup murder trial

A Jackson County jury this afternoon began deliberating the fate of a man charged with killing his girlfriend five years ago.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys agree that Justin J. Walkup, 31, stabbed Deborah Lilly multiple times in January 2003 at a Grandview home. Prosecutors asked the jury to find Walkup guilty of first-degree murder, arguing that evidence showed Walkup reflected on his actions before he stabbed Lilly.

A defense attorney argued that Walkup snapped during an argument and that he instead should be guilty of voluntary manslaughter. Read more
