Whats Going On

Poplar Bluff, MO

#1 Feb 27, 2011
PBRMC apparently has parted ways with K2 in their bid to build a new hospital in the Eight Points property. Is this the end of the Eight Points development? K2 told the DAR that they were going to find a new hospital to bring to their site but we all know that isn't going to happen. Does anyone know why PBRMC dumped K2 and the Oak Grove property. The City and State were planning to spend millions on Oak Grove and the junction at 67 bypass, is that still going to happen without the hospital? What's going on?

All the people that thought they were going to sell their property for a good price are screwed.

well of course they aren't going to pay up - not a quarter milllion per acre people!!! Eight points was trying to screw the hospital with their ridiculous price - they shot themselves in the foot here, blame them, not the hospital - Eight points got too greedy instead of looking at what could have been good for the community and coming to a fair and reasonable price that would have suited everyone.

You can't blame property owners for wanting the best price for their land, but $215,000 an acre was ridiculous. Sheehy got his wish, the million dollar trailor park will remain intact.
I think if the Coppertop can't get a Certificate of Need for 3 beds, K2 will not bring another hospital in. That was sour grapes for sure. Guess these country bumpkins weren't so easy to fleece...

I wonder if the city is going to spend all that money on Oak Grove since the hospital moved?

Questions to ponder
1. Was Eight Points ever, a real possibility or
just talk to make the city look like it was
going to start growing?
2. Why would the hospital not build in a
enterprise zone for tax relief?
3. Who is out the money for the studies for a
clover leaf on OG road. Also who will pay for
the actual construction if it is built?

How much did the hospital save buying the land they did, where they did, versus building in the enterprise zone, but initially paying much more for the land? 8 Points seemed shady, but hope springs eternal...

They weren't real stories that explained anything, they were press releases from two separate entities.

LOL @the 3bed hospital!?!? That is the joke around town. I dont forsee them getting a Certificate of Need. How can a 3 bed hospital compete with a multimillion dollar corporation that is willing to spend 200million to bring new technology and services to this area. And 100's more jobs. Coppertop wants to bring us a 3 bed hospital? Maybe a 3 bed hospital for them...good luck to all.

There is a reason behind the three beds. These people are not foolish. They have no intentions of remaining a 3 bed facility. Perhaps 3 is the current number of beds available for a Certificate of need. The can always(and will) add to the number at a later date. We desperately need another hospital if nothing else but to create a competitive market. Plus i dont know if you have noticed but the one we currently have is a piece of trash. You can build a beautiful state of the art facility but if you staff it with crappy nurses doctors and poor management you still have CRAP!!

Yes, the competition will be who can pay less. When Lucy Lee and DRMC were both operating, they both would only pay what the other paid, and price services comparable with each other. Barnes and Southeast have no intention of allowing a 3 bed hospital, and BJM has deep pockets and lots of pull.
FYI-You can add 10 beds a year with no re-application for a certificate of need .

Coppertop asked for a three bed hospital so they can collect higher payments from Medicare and Medicaid for services they already provide like MRI and CT.
you nailed it

Guest - you nailed it on the head - it isn't about providing a competitive market - the doctors out there at Coppertop aren't interested in providing better care to their patients - PLEASE!- they are interested in padding their pockets more than they already are. By obtaining a certificate of need for a 3 bed hospital, they can receive higher reimbursement rates from insurance companies for services they already provide - MORE MONEY FOR THEM! If they were truly interested in community and what is best for their patients, they would bury the hatchet with the hospital, act like adults, get on the same page and build this new facility together - and we could have a great community hospital. As it stands now, the doctors are too divided - how is the community suppose to support the hospital when the doctors don't even give it a chance?? They don't because they put their pocketbook before the good of their patients and the community as a whole. It very sad.

We don't have a community hospital. We have a for profit hospital that is owned by a corporation that is located out of state. They own the hospital for one reason and that is to make a profit. What is it to them if we have a great hospital or not? If the new hospital makes a greater profit then you build itif, not keep it as is.
Services are added if they create a profit, if not the patient goes elsewhere. As to the doctors, they are selling their medical services. You have the right to go elsewhere based on cost or specialities. That is your right

All very interesting but does anyone know if this will kill the Eight Points Development? Without the hospital, they have no draw to sell their properties. I would have loved to see some new retail and food places, but I don't see that happening now.
