What?
So this is saying that latinos don't or can't recognize great character and role models of other races? They can't be guided by the contributions of an Asian, a Pacific Islander, a Black, A European or any other person with a cultural heritage other than their own?
This statement alone is grounds for NOT naming the school after Mr Abril, as obviously his contributions don't extend towards erasing racist attitudes within his own district.
The school should be named Grand Terrace High School in recognition of the residents of the area, and Colton High should be renamed in honor of Mr Abril if it's such an important issue to name a school after him.
Perhaps members of other cultures should band together, march down the streets in Colton, disrupting their city as they protest this stupid choice made by yet another special interest group.
Just check out the videos on You Tube of Mel Albiso, VP of the Colton Board, bragging about how he is on the school board and making his opinion, not the district's opinion, known. Listen to his racial politics, which is really the driving force behind this.

I often wonder about Albiso's comment that Latino's are not represented on the Colton City Council when 5 of the six council members are Latino/Latina.
Perhaps they not Hispanic enough? Is there a grading chart? He is correct about making change by getting elected to a school board (anyone remember his unsuccessful bid to rename Grant School after his auntie for the same reason he voted for the new GT High school name?)

Has the school been "renamed" to Grand Terrace High School yet? The name it should of gotten in the first place.

It is really bad that we have to put more division into our school system. By using the name Grand Terrace High there is a unity of community. By FORCING Mr Abril's name on the community this does nothing but divide the School District.

Abril HS in Jerry Lewis's district, you know the one who has racked up over $1.2 million in legal bills for his illeagal behind the scenes hanky panky? sounds like the Colton school board learned well from Jerry. We will let Joe Baca HS be a continuation school in Rialto.

Why did 3 Board Members choose not to attend the meeting? This was a critical and important meeting and if they boycotted the meeting or blew it off, it shows you that they absolutely do not care about what the constituency thinks. I would hope that the voters will remember this the next Colton School Board election. THAT is poor leadership!!!
I love Albiso's quote in the video: "You want to see change, then get elected to a school board. Then it's only up to you to make those changes, which we have." My he is powerful. So powerful that it does not matter what the families of the district thinks.
Meglomania or reality? It is up to the voters to decide the next election. Is it about the students and families or about a single minded racist agenda above everything else? The whole mess is an example of the position of school board member being used to promote one's personal agenda and vendettas at the district's expense. If these Board members continue to be voted in, then do not be upset when the parents and students needs come last or at all. But you better believe that one agenda, the promotion of Hispanics, is above everything else.

so what was the outcome? I haven't seen or heard anything yet.I'm glad you can see Mel for who/
what he is.Trust me I would be equally disturbed if he put the promotion of white/black/Asian people above anything else.Equally scary is the fact that Melvin is also Assistant Superintendent for the San Bernardino School District and thus has the obvious ability to hire/promote racist teachers as well...

what get's me is there are how many Presidents?
If Albiso had his way every school named after a US President would be renamed-after a local person who 200 years from now won't even be remembered...yet the Presidents will as they are part of this countries history (oh,right,I forgot,Mel sees the NorthWest not as part of America but as Aztlan)

Grand Terrace, good job.

Just watch the CUSD does not pull a RUSD.

Initially, the high school over in Mentone was be called East Valley High School (EVHS). But quietly, the School Board tweaked the name to Redlands East Valley (REV), even though the school was in the County area and not in the city limits.

Sort of like a dog marking its territory. The Colton Unified School District Board is just as swarmy.

Who is Ray Abril? Oh, please - the school should of been named "Grand Terrace High" from the beginning! The school is for the whole community of Grand Terrace, not for some guy to "thank" his mentor (send the guy a card!).

Now they say the school will be called Grand Terrace High at the Ray Abril education center, come on please let make this right for the students of GT and name the school as the vote went. James Downs is a spineless excuse for superintendent. The man needs to grow some nads and stand up for his students.

I am surprised "Barack Obama High School" was not an option, though at least he is a US President and not some local yokel most people have no clue about

Glad to see that the public sees things quite clearly.
The board and the administration are on the take.
Public money for private vehicles and free gas, also?
One has to wonder how these "public servants" sleep. Answer: on silk sheets.
Vote them off the board and then go hard on the money spenders at the district office.
