I don't think it's fair to put words into somebody's mouth when you don't even know the person. He was apparently going to try to swim across. The celebration was because he was supposed to be getting married a couple of weeks.

This is just too strange. He was celebrating with friends and just "jumped" in? And noooooobody went in after him after 15-20 seconds went by and he didn't pop back up? Hmmmmm.... Let me guess what his last words were...

The story said he waved at his friends when he got partway across. It was dark at that time of the morning, so they would not be able to see him very good once he got a ways out.

How can you be so cruel and vendictive with your words?! You must have an awful lot of hate in you to say something so mean when something so devestating has happened. What do you think his parents are going through right now? What about the young lady he was suppose to be getting married too?...You are not a very nice person!!!!!!

Must have been 20 years ago, when I lived south of Holland, had an acquaintance drown doing the same thing in roughly the same place, Dewey sterett sp?
Nice guy had only known him a couple weeks. The current is strong in that part of the river.
Condolences to his loved ones.

Very sad, big mistake he made. How horrible for the families involved.

Lets hope the divers find him quickly and that no one else gets hurt in the search. People risk their lives in the waters and don't think of those who risk their lives to save or find them.

We have watched the intensity of the divers all day - they began their search early this morning and didn't quit until after 6 p.m.. The Sheriff's Department and the dive team have put forth a valiant effort trying to find this man. It has been so very sad to see the family waiting and watching at the river bank for their love one to be found - our heartfelt sympathy to them. This is the second person I have had the unfortunate experience to try to be found after trying to swim across the Kalamazoo River and didn't make it. The river is wider than it looks, colder than you think and has an extremely strong current. We knew something bad had happened when at 3 a.m. the whole river was lit up like it was broad daylight.

lost in translation:

while this was indeed, a stupid move, what are you thinking by asking, "nobody went in after him?" then we would have 2 dead people

THINK, would YOU?

Lost in translation- You are completely correct in saying pure stupidity as WZZM has done a fine job in botching this story to make my friend look stupid. I assure you as an attendee of the party, very little alcohol was involved and he did not jump in because he couldn't find a ride or however WZZM's little story tale went. It would be inappropriate to tell the true story until he is found.

I am a very close friend to the man’s fiancé’. Please think of her and his family before you write cruel and insensitive comments.

Let me help wzzm out a little with their reporting. Courtesy of MLIVE........

SAUGATUCK -- Allegan County sheriff's divers are searching for the body of a man who tried to swim across the Kalamazoo River early this morning.

Police believe the 28-year-old former Grand Haven-area resident drowned trying to swim about 200 yards from downtown to a place across the river where he and friends were staying for the weekend. He probably suffered cramps swimming in 54-degree water, with 3-knot current, sheriff's Lt. Mike Larsen said.

The victim's identity was withheld until all family members were notified. Some family members are at the scene, between Ship 'N Shore Motel and Star of Saugatuck.

Larsen said the man was in Saugatuck with friends when he and two others tried to get a ride back to the west side of the river after leaving a night spot shortly after 2 a.m. When they could not find a ride, he decided to swim across despite concerns of the two friends.

The friends heard him jump into the water, and soon found a ride. Before they left, they called to their friend in the water, and he waved as if to say he was OK. When they got to the other side, the friends could not see him in the darkness, and soon began looking on the shore with flashlights.

After 20 minutes of looking, they called 911.

Sheriff's deputies responded, and put divers in the water early today.

The victim had lived in the Grand Haven area before he took a job on the east side of the state. Police planned to remain at the scene until the victim is found or divers become too tired.

Police do not believe that alcohol played a role, rather it was his confidence he could make it across.

Maybe he wasn't waving because he was okay....perhaps his arms were in the air to signal for help?? When it is that late and dark, how would they be able to tell? Not a smart move on his part...my condolences to all his friends and family.
