I heard the story from someone earlier this week too--but as second hand info I won't post it as fact.

Regardless it was poorly handled by the the priest and diocese--the parishioners deserved better.

My first post was merely a SWAG based on the feedback over time of several parishioners who are close friends--and off base it would appear in this case.

The method in which this was handled has led to wild speculation, which has merit based on the recent happenings in the Catholic church.

well...."to very sad at oll" I really don't care what you believe. God knows that I don't lie and it was hard to take Fr. Phil's response the wrong way, he is a simple man.I also think that the fact that his legacy is being known for blessing of the bikes and being a harley rider speaks for itself. Is that what a priest wants to be known for? He is not the first Vietnamese refugee (family) to abandon the church. I don't wish him any bad but I think he should be in another vocation.
So, he blessed "bikes and bikers"??? OMG, what a horrible thing! Such a narrow minded take. EVERYONE needs blessings...Fr. Phil was much more than a "bike blesser/rider".

This priest had several affairs- full blown sexual affairs- while being priest in the military. He threatened one of these woman when she no longer wanted to see him. He said he would destroy her- kill her- and that he was more powerful than a general being an officer who also had a collar. Nothing would surprise me, because he appeared to be a sociopath in my mind. It is hard to imagine how many affairs and illegal pursuits he had. You are better off without him!

Relieved

Finally! It is no surprise that he should have troubles. He abandoned the truth a long time ago. He changed the Mass to suit his own needs. Spun the teachings of the Church to fit his own views. How many people did he lead astray? How many did he lead to sin by condoning sinful behavior?
Those of you who celebrated his continued disobedience to the Bishop and the teachings of the Church, you'd better take a look at your faith and do some reading up on what being a Roman Catholic (not a Fr. Phil Catholic) really means. Many errors came out of his mouth. I heard them firsthand. I witnessed many liturgical abuses. I had many sleepless nights because of what was going on there.
It's time for Jesus to take back his rightful place in that Church. For too long the focus has instead been on the pastor and the parishioners. It is so crucial for the Bishop to have courage to appoint the right priest there and begin to clean up the mess that's been made.

I refuse to believe that Fr. was anything but a good man. If it's a woman that he is leaving the parish for- then good for him! I think it's silly they can't have families. In fact "relieved", I find many of the things in the catholic church to be outdated and silly- but the basic beliefs I do believe in. I believe fr. phil grew the church in a positive way and he really appealed to the younger generation. We are the future of the church after all.

When you accept a position such as this you freely give up your right to privacy, you have chosen a different path.

Many are curious as to the reason that a adviser on moral and ethical issues would choose this path.

After all--we are known by our actions and not our words.

I agree with OLL. I find many things in the Catholic church to be outdated and silly as well. The GR Diocese is very liberal and many priests do mass differently.
The Fr. Phil our family knew was a good man. That doesn't mean he was perfect, none of us are. We are human and we make mistakes. I pray that he finds peace and happiness on his journey.
"Life was given that we might taste it to the fullest; enjoy and be enjoyed; give and receive; search for love and beauty and find them. So let's truly LIVE each day - in order that others may also really live rather that just "put up" with life! Don't waste this beautiful God-given gift!" Written by Fr. Phil. Taken from #26
