my parents live between Holland and Grand Haven near US31. recently, the dnr trapped a cougar near their house after neighbors reported tracks. the dnr wants this to be hush-hush. why can't they just admit cougars are here?
I heard its more than that. I heard they are intentionally releasing them in certain game refuges. I hope this isn't true for it should be by the vote of the people to do this. Especially if they are doing it near a populated area as I was told they did. I suppose since it is thier job to manage wildlife they think they have the right to do as they please. I am unclear on the law on this matter.

Me and my brother hunt Highland Rec state park in Milford every year. We've seen a Black Panther in Oct. 2005 and Cougar Nov. 2006. People have reported finding eaten deer carcasses up in trees. DNR claims someone is throwing them up there for a joke. Yeah right. LOL. What kind of person can throw a 150 pound dead animal up in a tree 30 feet?! Hilarious!

The black panter was probably a couger. Although up here people call cougers panthers. Im not sure they are the same cats though.

I've heard the DNR has actually admitted to releasing several pair of mountain lions in Michigan to help control the out-of-control deer population here. If that's true, how can they deny cougars/mountain lions/panthers exist?
out of control deer population? when my father hunts in the UP, all they ever see now are wolf tracks,NO deer. I do not believe it is out of control. Sounds like a DNR story/lie to me

Bobcats are common here in Michigan. They are not the same as a couger. Cougers are much bigger in size. The sounds are very different they make also. If you hear a sound like a baby crying in the woods at night, that is a Bobcat.

I would be surprised if you saw a Liger downstate. Those animals are huge in comparison to cougars. Look them up on the internet. Although they do look similar.

The liger had been spotted for several weeks before I saw it around my neighborhood and in my yard. There's a huge water spillway that's part of the Clinton River watershed near me, 20 plus miles of open woods and water and fields. I figured that someone eventually bagged it and made a rug or full mount of it. It was in the news for sometime, try a search in the News or Free Press websites.

I had a beagle at the time that chased it, that dog jumped 6 fences but couldn't keep up. The dog never jumped a fence before or after that.

It wasn't as heavy as you would think. 180- 225lbs, length in stretch mode jumping was about 7 feet.

Maybe it was still young

I brought the bow and the 12 gauge and the .270 by the back door for a month or so after that and hung some chickens and some venison out for awhile, now and then hoping to bait him back in. I even tried a wounded rabbit call a few times but no luck on it ever returning again.

I only ended up with liger hair and paw print casts that I made

I saw a tan cougar cross Mound Road just south of 13 Mile Road in Warren MI (I was headed northbound driving to work) at 6:20 a.m. on Thursday March 29, 2007. Its the most amazing thing I've seen in a long time!! He/she was in a full-out run, bounding 8-10 feet each stride, it was very quick. I know others saw him/her because alot of us slowed down to let the sighting sink in, I felt like pulling someone over just to have a witness. I hope they will contribute to one of these sighting websites. There have been urban legends around for awhile, but now I know its true.

If you're serious, that's the Liger, it's still running in and around the Red Run drain for the Clinton River spillway. The "Tiger" stripes on a Liger are very faint for the most part unless you're really close to it, you won't see it because they're very subtle.

I live in Hudsonville, Mi. I work third shift and was on my way home one morning, when all of a sudden a big cat ran across the road infront of me and another car. the driver of the other car and I just looked at each other in amasement on what we just seen.It was definatly not a dog, deer, or a house cat. I described the cat to my Dad and he said it sounds like a cougar. The cat was big, tan colored, and muscular.

My brother has seen a cougar twice this season in Horse Heads NY. His dogs chased it away from him as he was out on a run in the fields and woods.

I know for a fact that thier are cougers in Michigan because I have personally witnessed three cougar sightings in the last two years. The last sighting was approximately 50 yards from my home on June 14, 2007. The first sighting was just over 2 years ago and my dog disappeared two days prior to that. The cougar was full grown at the sighting two years ago. The one I saw tonight was a cub. Please watch your children and pets in Monroe county, Michigan as the cougars have been sighted very close to homes during the day and at night time.

I am just really surprised you saw a Liger.
Here is some information on the Liger.

The liger is a hybrid cross between a male Panthera leo (lion), and a female Panthera tigris (tiger) and is denoted scientifically as Panthera tigris Panthera leo.[1][2] A liger resembles a giant lion with diffused stripes. They are the largest cats in the world, although the Siberian Tiger is the largest pure sub-species. Like tigers, but unlike lions, ligers enjoy swimming. A similar hybrid, the offspring of a male tiger and a female lion is called a tigon.

This was taken from Wikipedia. Check out the rest of the info. on Wikipedia regarding the Liger.
