I know that this is not the fault of the school districts. We are all feeling overwhelmed and scared to have our kids transfered to schools in bad area's. We do need to let our politicians know that we are tired of our tax dollars being taken away from our kids and being used to educate the children of people that have broken our laws and expect to live off the rest of us. One of the schools that will close is 2 blocks from our house and now our kids will be bussed to a bad neighborhood to attend school. It makes me angry because I pay my property taxes, state taxes ect.. For what?

Instituting tuition-based requirements won't solve anything and doesn't make the tough issues we face go away. By the way, state and federal LAW dictates how we must do certain things as well. Maybe law-makers could find value in your suggestion, because I don't.

Bad neighborhoods?? that is ignorance at it's best. have you every been around the other neighborhoods of some of the other elementary schools? I went to Parkview and still live right up the street from parkview, and i can tell you right now that the area around parkview is very far from a "bad" area. Gladiola is right across the street from newhall, do you plan on sending your kid to newhall/jackson park in the future? do you not realize that one day your kid will be forced to go to school with kids from these so called "bad neighborhoods"? my goodness. Parkview, Gladiola, West, and also HW are all great areas. even rogers lane isn't a bad area. once again, im assuming since your child goes to hudington woods that you plan to either send them to park or rogers, well rogers lane is right next to rogers and parkview is right by park, so im assuming you plan on sending your kid to grandville becuase those are bad areas to you???

Every city has good and bad neighborhoods. It is a matter of opinion. If you are happy and do your part in your community, be proud. Those of you complaining, do something productive to make your neighborhood a better place for you and your children!
Quality Matters

I would not suggest that it is a question of quality of neighborhoods. This is Wyoming no matter what school we go to its going to have those with economic problems. With the exception of the area across 28th st in Taft's area most of Wyoming is safe. However what is West, Gladiola and Huntington Woods doing right. Why does Parkview and Taft continue to struggle. This is the real problem with neighborhood schools they do not provide balance or diversity. If HW can achieve with nearly 50% of their students coming from Taft and Parkview its more than an opinion. My children did not achieve at Parkview, they are doing very well at HW. Huntington is full of disgruntled parents, for some it is the only reason they stay in Wyoming. The scores of High Schools and Middle Schools are average, this is the time when we have to decide how we are going to improve that. Keep the programs that work. I have no issues with my children going to school with students from Parkview or Taft.

I think it's important to remember that the areas that Parkview and Taft are in have very high rental turn over. It makes it very difficult, even for a great teacher to get those kids where they need to be. Not all are behiond, but they lack the stability and consistency in their acedemic studies and that absolutely influences scores. I'll bet the majority of HW students are not transient and have been at that school more consistantly. Also, kids who have been around have better social and behavioral skills, and many other factors that influence scores. Kids are at school 6. hours of the day, there is only so much that can be done in that amount of time. These basic skills need to begin in the hoime, and for many of the students in these schools, they just don't have the home support they need.

Something is not working at Parkview and Taft. Most of those going to Parkview come from single family homes, though I do not know how many rent. It is correct Taft does have a lot of rental and government housing in there area. So does West and they are doing very well. None of the Wyoming schools including HW could be considered influential; remember the largest apartment complex in Wyoming Ramblewood is across the street from HW. The only school that caters influential Wyoming students is Grand View part of the Grandville school district It would be beneficial to spread students out, dump the neighborhood school concept that is not working for many in Wyoming. Busing does not seem to be the issue, most of the plans will involve more busing.
