You got to love it. Why don't they have remotes on their belt to lock and unlock the doors, or do they.

well no shit.
what was he supposed to do?
if he tried to stop it, he'd be in trouble again.
give the guy a break, and let him do his job!

He can't handle drug busts. He can't handle domestic disputes. Maybe he needs to just shuffle papers for police department. That would probably save the taxpayers a lot of money.

Who cares. The guy was doing his job correctly. Do you think every cop shuts off his car and locks it on a traffic stop, heck no. Thats what this was, yes it was a domestic but not at a home. It was off a traffic stop along side of the road. You people who get on here and criticize really have zero clue what a quarter of the job really involves on a day to day basis. Educate yourself before you open your ignorant gums.

You've got to wonder about jumping in a private vehicle and going in pursuit

Good Point. I wonder what the liability to the county would be for that if the private vehicle was in an accident.

that vehicle was offered to officer Huizenga by the owner of it, he didnt just take it on his own.

This serves OCSD right. This incompetent deputy should have been fired for nearly killing an unarmed young man. He never should have had an opportunity to lose his police cruiser.
How much more money is this keystone cop going to cost taxpayers?

Never said he did--Liability is the big question here.

Didn't say he did--but the liabiliy issues for using a private vehice and potential injury to the owner who went along for the ride looms large.

Common sense and good judgement seems to be lacking in the OCSD.

Since you know it all maybe you should run for sherriff. I predict that you'll get a whopping 2 votes.

You people that love to judge the officers, never say much about the actual CRIMES that were being committed. Officers do a hard job EVERYDAY. I ,for one, am very thankful for that. Mr. Zalsman, was breaking the law every which way.(He has a little history of that.) HE is the one that was in the wrong...not the officer.

Have you listened to the audio of the 'chase'...this guy is not playing with a full deck.

Why is there even a thread about this?

Huizenga did not violate any protocol before or after the alleged car theft by 26-year-old James Zalsman, who was arraigned Monday on multiple felony charges.

“We looked at the details of the situation and felt as though the deputy involved followed procedure,” Steigenga said.“He made very good decisions and did things very appropriately in the situation.

“There’s no reason to do anything.”
Department policy is to leave cruisers running during investigations because it is not feasible for deputies to lock their cars and then fumble with keys when they need to detain an unruly subject, Steigenga said.

I don't think he did anything wrong. It wouldn't even be in the news had it not been for "who" the officer was. Can you imagine what he was thinking when he say his car driving away? Probably, wait till the topix posters get a hold of this news! You gotta admit, he's having a crappy year.

This poor guy can't catch a break no how. Leave him be, he is suffering enough. However, I doubt he gives much of a rip about topix posters, if he's even aware of it. He's got better things to do, like protecting Ottawa County's thankless citizens, along with the citizens who do actually care. My personal thanks to all the officers who risk their lives every day for our safety.

Liability would be 0 if the driver had permission from the owner.

Oh geeze, waking up from a nap to such stupidity

Liability: The Officer kept in contact w/the Department via radio and was never told to stop pursuit
