It isnt "City of G.R." money. Watch the video in the link, at 1:10 in it, it says "no money from the city is going into the project".
All of the money is coming from private donations. Not from the city.
For all I care, if people want to spend there own money on a statue, and put it downtown, who cares?

Besides, it will probably end up like the statue of John Ball, at the Zoo, and get covered in bird poo anyway.

How about $1,435 for GRPD administration to take a tour of a museum in Detroit. That was in the recent City Commission approval of travel expenses. Makes me want to raise my taxes.

No city budget dollars have gone into the project, Robinson said.

Its not that simple. This is $350,000 that folks are donating to the City. Would Rosa Parks have wanted $350,000 spent on a monument or $350,000 spent on bettering the lives of folks that depend on public transportation.

Oh dont worry about that! Your taxes will go up when your leader Obama spends $2.5 TRILLION on his takeover of health care, and you're worried about a frickin statue?
I bet you'd be all for it, if the city wanted to put up a statue of Obama. But you are against this because Rosa Parks is Black, and that makes you a racist in my book.

They did name that Ice Skating rink downtown after her.
I can remember when she won all those gold medals for ice skating in the Olympics a few years ago.

FYI

Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African American civil rights activist whom the U.S. Congress later called the "Mother of the Modern-Day Civil Rights Movement."

I don't think Rosa Parks won any gold medals for ice skating in the Olympics.

I opposed that, I thought that we should have named the new bus station after her, much more fitting if we had to name something after her. The area at the corner of Pearl and Monroe has had a name for a century, Campau Square. There are buildings down there with that name, Campau Square Building and Campau Square Plaza Building unless I missed it and they renamed them after Rosa Parks Circle. Campau Square was the traditional place that politicians gave speeches when they came to town, there was no need to change the name.

$100,000 came from the Downtown Development budget (which is property taxes), but a different purse than GR's budget purse. It was still taxpayer monies from the Development gang.

"The largest single donation was a $100,000 gift from the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority, which is funded by downtown property taxes but has a budget separate from the city's. No city budget dollars have gone into the project, Robinson said."

They should have called it Lyman Parks Circle if they really wanted to honor a local African American.

I actually wrote City Hall to do just that!

I still refuse to call it Rosa Parks Circle because it was an insult to our former mayor, who was a huge advocate for the downtown area back when it was dying.

To me it's just Monroe Center Amphitheater.

Good point!
Besides, what did Rosa Parks ever do for downtown G.R.?
