Obama salaried overtime wages

Anyone out there have better insight than me on this subject? Salaried employees (anywhere between $455 wk.-$1000 wk. may be entitled to overtime wages? A buddy of mine is salaried. His weekly wage is $1050 wk., but is expected to be "hands on" in manufacturing at least 50% of the time. Although required to put in 45hrs. per week for his wage, he puts in a minimum of 60+ hours per week as needed and pretty much required of him. Most of the hourly employees he oversees make more money the him.
He had no choice except to deny the salary position and seek other employment. However at his age, finding employment with another company would be rather difficult. As I stated, he works 60hrs. per week but is only paid according to salaried 45hrs. per week. If he were to complain, slowly but surely he would be phased out with an underling to take over his position... only to be in the same boat as him. Yes, it generally is a "dog eat dog" world... but does "right" even hold a small trump card anymore?
