Because the rest of us always have to lower ourselves to the least common denominator.
And what is the least common denominator at Union High these days?
A: Brown people.

The school demographic is:
Ethnicity This School State Average
Hispanic 39% 5%
White, not Hispanic 35% 71%
Black, not Hispanic 25% 20%
American Indian/Alaskan Native 1% <1%
Asian/Pacific Islander <1% 3%
So it's 74% white and Hispanic.
This school has a tradition going back before 1859. It doesn't fit the mold of some others and perhaps deserves more of an opportunity to survive.

Superintendent as well as all her "King's men" need to lower their own wages.....haven't heard a dang thing about that. They want to close schools to save money, not lower their own outrageous incomes.
