Here's my sob story. Sad but true and scarry. I lost my FT job in May and quit my PT job the same day because I couldn't afford child care while I was working the PT job. I made this decision prior to any knowledge that I would be losing my FT position. I only picked up the PT position to earn extra money to save for a vacation with my daughter. I was able to collect six weeks of benefits and then found a temp job for nine weeks. During this time I was sent a Letter of Restitution Due from the UIA stating because I quit a PT job (That was costing me money rather than making me money) I was required to pay back the entire $2000+ in benfits I had received. As suggested I wrote the UIA to protest this decision stating I only worked the PT job for one month and only earned about $350 during that month. My last week of the temp assignment I received another letter from the UIA stating they have denied my protest and I was still obligated to pay back the benefits I received. I sent in a letter of appeal and requested a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge. The next week I tried to reopen my claim and was told until this issue is resolved and I had reworked a total of $4300+ I would not be able to collect benefits. The ALJ denided my appeal stating the PT employer was not at fault for my leaving and therefore he ruled against me. He also stated the PT employer was my Last Employer. This is wrong! The UIA made a mistake and withdrew money from the wrong employer! The FT position that I held for almost three years was with my LAST EMPLOYER, that is the check I paid my bills and mortgage with NOT the PT employer whom I worked for one month and earned a whopping $350. So my next step is to appeal to the Board of Review in Lansing. I was told it could take three months or longer to receive a ruling from them. I lived without an income for two months and finally found a job as a PT bartender. I have one mortgage payment left in the bank and that's it. I am a single parent with a child trying to survive on basiclly nothing. In order to get assistance to keep my house, I have to let it go into foreclosure first. What is wrong with this picture????? It's a shame that I worked all my life and contributed money into the system but when I really need it, I can't get any help.
So Sorry for your pain. I'll be praying that everything works out for your family.

Your story about MARVIN being accessible over the internet is true if you are just starting a claim for unemployment. It does not seem to be true if you are certifying with MARVIN to get the bi weekly check.

As for you unemployed people, maybe you would be employed if you were not so simple minded. You can't figure out anything no matter how simple they make it for you.
For myself your comment is rude. I have worked since I was 12 years old. I was legally employed at 14 and worked successfully until the age of 46. When the hammer comes down on your job or silver spoon you may just understand.

The link works for the unemployed woker but it will not let you register. I have filed unemployment for the past two years, gotten checks and just this past Christmas I had to file again. Now when I register on the UIA web site for online services for unemployed people, it says my pin is rejected because it doesn't match the one on file.
Go figure since I am still using the same pin for the last two years.
You have to re-register every year.

Michigan now has the highest unemployment rate in the country. where do you suppose they find jobs?
I say "they" because I have a job but im off for the next few weeks due to the auto assembly plants taking an extended holiday break.

We have every right to complain. The UIA is a service that we all pay for with our tax dollars. Like any goverment agency, if it doesnt run right, its our right to stand up and demand that it gets fixed.

Amen to that, I am in the same boat. I pay taxes, but when I need some assistance I can't get crap from this state. Perhaps the state should require picky employers to drop their high standards for doing mediocre jobs so the standard population can get a job! Just because I am not 60k in debt with a bachelors degree doesn't mean I don't know how to answer a flippin' telephone! Seriously, this state is going down the tubes and it isn't going to get any better until someone opens their eyes and gets things back in order. What's it going to take? The whole state to pack their bags and move elsewhere? People are in NEED here and we pay our tax dollars...we deserve some assistance!

I have been unemployed for over a year (job moved out of state. Like Muskegon legal secretary I too have sent out hundreds of resumes and only had two interviews in 16 months! Reson I am told is that there are zillions applying for the same position.
As for Gambler...look at the GR Press job section used to be a whole section of jobs available now there is only one page!
Being out of work this long, I can't afford to move out of state. Other states are in the same boat and if you don't have an address in their state they are not going to hire you so am stuck here in Michigan.
I was fortunate to get thru to Marvin on line today and haven't had trouble filing or getting my checks
And just two weeks ago they were saying that the UIA was not broken..........and now they say oh my how did it get this way!!! Wake up Lansing!

When I went to mi.gov/uia there are options and I got the page where it takes you through just what Marvin says on the phone
