So the Dept. of Defense chief announces a 2015 budget for the military with cuts to manpower, weapons systems, and bases.

Proponents say it's about time to cut a budget item that is more than doubled in size in the last 12 years.

Opponents say it's absolutely crazy talk to think about cutting any military spending and that allies and enemies will see us as weaklings.

Which is it?

I think it is the right timing for these defense cuts.....our chances of invading anyone else may have ebbed. Surgical strikes of Special Forces seem to be much more effective, than nation building....

I'm not even sure about surgical strikes.

The only war we have going on now is the war on terror. Should be pretty easy to put out the word that if some group you allow to reside in your country attacks us...... We bomb you!
And none of this precision shock and awe crap that didn't shock or awe anybody in these recent invasions. The last time we saw a country that was in shock was Japan. A few months before that, it was Germany.

Boots on the ground hasn't changed a thing in Afghanistan or Iraq. Trying to cuddle up to the Libyans didn't work, and Benghazi would've never happened if we didn't have the morbid need to stick our noses into another country's affairs.

How many billions do we spend to support allies that don't invest the same amount to protect themselves? How many of these supposed allies do whatever they want when they don't agree with our principles?

Wow you're stupid!
And now you want to cut spending on our military, and enter into war with Russia!
That idiot in chief is going to get us into war with Russia and you liberal morons want to cut spending on the military, but give billions to Obama's buddies, who spent billions to elect him.
Hypocrites!

Keep blaming Bush!

Don't know if we will ever realize it...but, we don't have to be the primary police/security, around the globe.....That is why the cuts are needed, if we are to really lower spending....

Your lies and stupidity are hilarious Jimbo. The draw downs and cuts to the military are the doings of the obstructionist GOPher party -- the result of the GOPher Sequestration deal. Look it up and report back to me Jimbo. Until then I suggest you shut your mouth because you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Yes it did. It also had cuts to farm subsidies and then turned around and established "insurance" to help cover the loss of the subsidies. Gotta love the "you didn't see us do that" thought process in Washington these days.

A study of history should show us that the isolationism of the 1930's didn't make us any safer, but I also can't see where we are any safer today from our current enemies, even when we have seen a doubling of defense appropriations in the last twelve years.

It's hard to believe that some people think we still aren't spending enough on defense, even though they think we shouldn't raise taxes to pay for it!

Congress passed a farm bill that cut the food stamp entitlement..... They also refused to extend the of unemployment benefits for the long term unemployed as that was considered a wasteful entitlement...... We've also been bombarded with numerous rants that defined pensions for local state and federal employees is an entitlement we can't afford......

However, the farm bill didn't include a cut in welfare for corporate farming interests, any changes to special tax cuts given to corporations, and no Congressman mentioned the radical idea of cutting their own pensions.

When the proposed budget included the radical idea that military retirees should be required to either wait until the normal retirement age or face a cut when they draw their pensions, we're told that this will lead to the collapse of the country......

It also seems impossible that we'll ever see any type of real tax reform that could lead to actually paying for any of this, including our two most recent unfunded wars and a Medicare part D program that only adds to the deficit.

There is a ton of grey area, between staying out of every conflict....and isolationism..Time perhaps to let the region's own diplomacy have sway....

I've always had a problem with any Agricultural Department, that allowed a Dairy farmer's milk to cost less a gallon, than gasoline....We need to protect our farmers....The global commodity of tomorrow, will be food and fresh water.....

With all the developers buying up the farmland and using it for obscene housing units, the only food that will be ours in the future will be Monsanto's version of food that everyone is so up in arms about now. And I need to clarify the "obscene housing" part of my post. I consider a home obscene when it is 5,000-6,000 sq feet for 2 people. It is just a show piece that is bought to "keep up with the jones's" and that is totally not necessary when the food supply prices are rising all the time because of the shortage of growing land.

But yet the sequestration is why Obama can claim the deficit is better, the guy is a joke.

I don't think the future is in peril, from the shortage of growing land, but you know the situation up there, better than i....We have alot of McMansions down here, but most of the current building is single family, townhouses, commercial ans especially apartments.....single family homes range from $250 ish to the Moon....much higher around the beach, polo and aero communities....R.E. down here should be golden for awhile....especially after the north's severe winter ....

"I consider a home obscene when it is 5,000-6,000 sq feet for 2 people"

We can only imagine what you think of your patriot buddy BatchyBoi living in one of his multiple homes that are twice the size of what you consider obscene?

I'd hate to think that we agree that people like that are the problem!
