I remember, as a kid, all the cool kids had the LAV bumper stickers on their cars' back window. If you had a Trans Am or a Camaro - the LAV sticker in the window was absolutely a necessity.

Oh, and lets not forget the LAV "wings" lapel pins! If you didn't have those on your Levi jean jacket, you were probably a nerd!:-)

FIRE TONY GATES He's getting stale, or has been stale for the past 10 years. 14 years on the air this time, its too long. need fresh blood in there and maybe I won't surf past LAV every time. "Ton the Fun Guy" (Vomit)

Remember when LAV was the hottest and best station in town....Mr. Shepard made sure it
was that way, and he was brillant with
creating it.

Sure he wouldn't have allowed the station
to get to the boring state that it has
become!

Sorry but listening to Detroit Tigers is
for old people and shouldn't be on a
Rock and Roll station.

Haven't listened to it since that happened!

Rest in Peace Mr. Shepard....you were great!

Sorry to hear that Mr Shepard has passed, but now he will join his beautiful wife.

Lav was legendary in Grand Rapids, which was still in the horse and buggy era.

It brought fun and excitement to all of us who listened to LAV only. There was nothing else
like it.

Best times was the LAV Raft Race, so many memories, had to pick just a couple.

God Speed Mr Shepard, you will be fondly remembered for what you brought to Grand Rapids.

truly a media mogul and very popular man here in this market for many years.
Innovative....ie: the WLAV Raft Race that was a riot. I was an avid listener to 'top 40' on 'LAV for years way back when.....good stuff in the '60s & '70s for hours on end while you worked or whatever.

My Sympathy to the Shepard family. I worked with and for John for 5 years and even though we didn't see eye to eye on some issues, he was always fair, honest and up front with me at all times. Thanks to his ability to listen, he let a rag tag group of radio freaks put their sounds on the air waves in the early seventies and nurtured their ideals to become what has been call "THE LEGEND" WLAV-FM!

He helped bring us M. Dung, Tony Gates, Kevin Matthews, Tim Steele, Doc Donovan (Rest in Peace), Allison Harte, Dave Logan, Michael Siriani, and I can humbly add myself to that list, along with the greatest bunch of sales people on the planet.

Thank you John and bless you for all you've done for Grand Rapids!

Most of the response here copies my thoughts also. That station was a leader in it's day. Now it sucks. If your lucky enough to be able to tune in, pick up DepTracks on XM 40. Or if you have DirecTV its at 840. Awesome. In it's day it was great, The old Buc, Doc Donavan, Patty and Aris Hayes...Who else would just toss on and play a hole side of vinyl. Now your never more than 6 songs away from the same old ZZ Top crap. The legend continues (to fail us) Gods speed Mr. John

Ogie...yes Ogie Dryer? I just saw your post. Wasn't Keith Maniac on around your time also? Yes Logan also and Steele was right around the demise of this station.

Yes LAV was great and popular in the 80's. Unfortunately so were mullets and parachute pants.
LAV plays the same wore out classic rock from 20 years ago, with too much Tony Gates (a legend in his own mind) blathering on air. They really are a joke now and I never listen to them
