Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

Check to see if they have paid for the elevator service or when the last service was performed.

This is an absolutely illegal situation. If there's a fire in this building while the elevator isn't working, then people will die, God forbid. That would be murder in my book. The state needs to step in now. This is an unlicensed facility and should be fined and shut down ASAP. That's the only way to protect there people.
It is always advised to NOT use the elevator in the case of a fire, but rather the stairs. A fire can cut power to an elevator trapping any occupants.

Whether or not the elevator works should not matter in this case. The main issue should be that they are not licensed. An inspection aimed at licensing would most likely turn them down because they have mobility impaired clients on the second floor.

If you'd read my later comment, I admitted that I missed to boat on that.

I feel AFC homes should be made to be licensed. Must be no one from the state has loved ones in a AFC home or I bet they would have to be licensed from that min on.

Excellent point, Bon Van. I hope someone calls the local fire department. Most hotels have handicap access, there is no reason to leave these people stuck in their rooms.
How can they stay open if they aren't licensed? Isn't that a requirement? I assume that these people aren't wealthy, but that doesn't mean they don't have the right to live in a safe facilty.
This company lost their license a few years ago. The owner Marva Townsend has had many lawsuits from companies performing work on her properties and not getting paid for the work.
Check the court records, check the state licensing records. Lots and lots of violations.

Operating an assisted living center with residents from all different back grounds, lifestyles, and disabilities is not easy; my grandmother operated one for years. Families dont visit, the staff become family for the residents.

I can only imagine the frustration of the residents with cabin fever. I have respect for the caregivers and appreciate their efforts in resolving this issue. Is there any assisted living center with a surplus of parts handy should their elevator break down? If so, maybe they can lend a working part.

I honestly think we should be a little patient in this instance. I'm sure the owners aren't purposely holding the parts hostage to create unhappy residents.

For those who can get around without assistance, maybe they can find suitable housing elsewhere; if their diability checks stretch far enough. Otherwise lets look at the good things this center provides and not fry them for a repair with timelines out of their control.

I HAVE ACTUALLY JUST LOOKED AT THIS WEBSITE AND I CAN NOT BELIEVE THE PRE-JUDGEMENTAL COMMENTS HERE. FIRST OF ALL THE ELEVATOR WAS DOWN FOR 1 DAY, HOWEVER IT WAS HAVING TROUBLE FOR 1 WEEK WHEN WE ORDERED A PART ANTICIPATING THERE WOULD BE A PROBLEM. DURING A CHRISTMAS PARTY WHERE THE ELEVATOR WAS LOADED WITH HEAVY EQUIPMENT IT DID GO OUT. THAT WAS ON A SUNDAY NIGHT, THE MEDIA CAME OUT ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY THE ELEVATOR WAS REPAIRED
NONE OF THE PEOPLE IN OUR FACILITY HAS EVER BEEN STUCK ON THE FLOOR - IN ORDER FOR ANY ONE TO LIVE HERE THEY HAVE TO BE ABLE TO WALK DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS IF THERE WAS A FIRE!
THIS NEWS REPORTER MARK THOMPSON WAS NOT INTERESTED IN THE REAL FACTS OF THIS STORY - HE JUST WANTED TO MAKE IT SEEM TO BE SOMETHING THAT IT WAS NOT. HE DID NOT MEET WITH ME AND HE DID NOT REPORT THE INFORMATION IN WHICH I GAVE HIM.
WHERE WAS NEWS 8 WHEN THESE INDIVIDUALS WERE ABUSED BY THEIR OWN FAMILIES, WHEN THEIR OWN FAMILIES DID NOT HELP THEM OR EVEN GIVE THEM A PLACE TO LAY THEIR HEAD??
WE HAVE HELPED EVERY INDIVIDUAL THAT HAS COME THROUGH THE DOORS. SOME WITH LITTLE AND SOME WITH NONE!
TO ALL OF THOSE WHO MADE YOUR CRITICAL REMARKS YOU HAVE PROBABLE NEVER HELPED ANY ONE OR WENT OUT OF YOUR WAY TO HELP SOMEONE WHO IS NOT YOUR RELATIVE YOUR LIFE!! I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT GIVING A COUPLE OF BUCKS I'M TALKING ABOUT REALLY HELPING SOMEONE!
YOU GUYS ALMOST GOT ME .. I ALMOST THREW IN THE TOWEL, I WAS REALLY HURT BY THIS, BUT I KNOW THAT HE WHO HAS BEGUN A GOOD WORK IN ME WILL COMPLETE IT.
AS FAR AS MY OWING PEOPLE, YES I HAVE BILLS, BUT I HAVE PAID, EVERYBODY I HAVE OWED.
I HOPE THIS GETS TO YOUR READERS 12/10/10. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER -= TO SET THESE LIES STRAIGHT.

Fact: Your facility's license was revoked a few years back.
Fact: The state does not move to revoke licenses unless there are significant and numerous violations of licensing regulations.
Fact: You have continued operating without a license and misrepresenting Caring Meadows as an assisted living facility, which it is not, because it is not licensed.
Fact: The state is saying it will not give you another license, which means your residents may end up having to move anyways, and it will be your fault that they lose their home, because you chose to continue operating an unlicensed facility.

That is the bottom line.
