Grand Rapids; a good place to live?

I would suggest Hudsonville, also known as "Little Jerusalem."
I have lived there for many years and found people to be accepting of each other regardless of religious preference. Please be aware however, that Hudsonville Ice Cream, the world's best, is actually now made in Holland, MI.

Any place full of poor people that hate Democrats, is a good place to stay away from. This is one of those places. The highest degree you'll find from most people is a GED - but they'll be happy to tell you how to live your life, and how the President should run the country.
Add to the fact that everyone but the college students are inbred dutch losers who belong to a cult, and think you'll burn in hell if you don't join it. Sure thing. Good thing this place is so cold, these idiots will be the ones burning forever.
If you're a republican that has enough money so you aren't voting against your best interests - look into some wealthy areas in Georgia.
Why are you such a miserable hater? If you hate Whoppers, don't go to Burger King. If you don't like fish - Charley's Crab is a poor choice. If you hate people of Dutch Reformed ancestry - maybe western Michigan isn't for you. I doubt that they're all leaving so maybe you might as well. I think you are either jealous or resentful of the success of the Dutch in this area. Have a couple Heinekens and chill!

It's been a banner season for heating and cooling repair businesses, that's for sure!

Yes it can! Lived in Pittsburgh for a short time and you felt more like a luge olympian than a driver in the Winter.

The hills are nothing compared to the potholes! We've got some in GR that are big enough to swallow a house!

I'll put up with a butt-roasting Florida Summer any day over the icy hell we've had in Michigan this Winter.

I'm closing on place in south FL Mar 3, can't wait!

Hello singles life, south American and eastern European women, amazing Italian and seafood, Bloomingdales, and east coast Jews and Italians, respectful and educated black population from the islands (Jamaica Haiti Caribbean), nice foreign cars on the road, and Publix

Good buy sexual offenders on the news everyday, over weight ugly white women who wear little to no makeup and dress like farmers, Dutch CRC people with last names that end "ma" or "stra" and/or begin with "Van", restaurants that all have the same food from Gordon Food, the Macy's the ONE department store, the horrible radio stations, the funny looking news casters that people think are hot but are far from not (Rachel Ruiz), Did I mention NORTHERN Netherland Dutch CRC people, low-income uneducated blacks, and the Mexican INDIANS at Walmart.

Bye (note the correct spelling). Not sure those super educated people down in south FL will appreciate your low education, but have at it. Sure hope none of the groups you dislike so much live in South Florida or you will be back in "I hate everyone" land again. Oh yeah, don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya.

May not see eye to eye politically, but I agree with that!

For me, this Winter has convinced me to begin planning a move to warmer climates when our businesses allow for it, but that won't be soon, and it's not because of some idiotic racist notion of Grand Rapids, which is a great place.

In the meantime we're going to travel more - starting with a Florida Spring Training week! I'll tell you what, baseball season can't come soon enough!!

Good for you, though i am more likely to go to Dolphin practices.....It does'nt cost that much to either retire down here or snowbird....found nice condos for my Cousin for $35,000 and up....If we did'nt have a big house, i would like the Townhouses at around $85-150,000....Sister has a condo in Orlando and a place in Grand Haven.....

That's pretty affordable. I've got like 30 years to go before I can think about retirement, but the snowbird idea is looking pretty appealing after this Winter! We like the Sarasota area.

Grand Haven - Good for your sis! She gets the best of Michigan. Lovely area. My family used to own a cottage on Lake Michigan closer to Stickney Ridge area. The family owned a cottage on Spring Lake for years too, so Grand Haven is like a second home to us.

When we move from Michigan it'll be Summer in Grand Haven that we miss the most.

Haha Rusks!! I love Fricanos Pizza too (which has branched our into Grand Rapids) but that greasy pizza is more of a once or twice a year guilty pleasure for us.

Matjes ... Covered with apple, lightly smoked herring, and bell peppers ... YUM! Damn, I'm hungry now.

Sanibel/Captiva/Lido Key have been a favorite quickie vacation for my wife and I. How long have you lived in Florida??

(Not sure why Three Rivers comes up. We live in Grand Rapids.)

Born and raised in Michigan, spent the last 6-7 years in Grand Rapids, just left there to relocate in Canada.

Bottom line is that, like any big city, it has good points and bad. The good points are accessibility to the lake, lots of things to do outside, festivals, pretty decent nightlife with a pretty clean down town area, etc.

Downside: The jobs market sucked. Really. 500-600 resumes sent out for a dental job and it was god awful landing anything. Jobs are still very competitive in the area, depending on your skill set.

Politically speaking it is a Conservative stronghold...but there are a lot of Libs there, as well.

PS--Cinco de Mayo is a great place to eat, awesome Margaritas. Avoid Rockford, Forest Hills, Ada, Cascade area if you don't want to be around the snobbier types. E GR, too, to some extent. I lived in Rockford my last year in the area and I was NOT impressed: Little assed town trying to show big. Meh.
