A force fed "cultural" event made to give lil Rick DeVos a name for himself while the local hotels and restaurants profit that are owned by his family and fellow CRC cohorts. Ricky's nothing more than a front man with his grandfather's resources.
Again, instead of trying to artificially create culture, the city should embrace it's true one ethnicity (Dutch) and true one religion (CRC) and have Dutch themed downtown with Dutch restaurants instead of fake Irish bars and fake Italian restaurants owned by the Dutch.
Why aren't they proud of their own culture and why can't they make money on it hahaaa........
So, following your "theory" there are no businesses in the downtown area that are owned by someone who is NOT a member of the DeVos family?? Is that your "theory"? Because I can name at least 4 of them that ARE NOT OWNED BY A DEVOS FAMILY MEMBER, nor are they CRC. Nice try though. You are nothing more than another bigoted troll who can't find anything else to whine about.

Art prize is art for Midwesterners. A majority of artists are from within a 300 mile radius. A majority of spectators are from within a 150 mile radius. Art Prize is a family friendly, generic, watered down form of art. The whole principle of art prize goes against what the real art world stands for. Having mothers pushing strollers full of little blonde haired brats choosing and deciding what pieces are the most inspirational is a slap in the face of the entire art world. First off she wouldn't know what real art was if it stood up and slapped her in the face. Secondly, this woman is the same woman who has never, ever (before art prize) cared two craps before about art in her life. Demanding federal funds for the arts be cut off, censoring both the art world and the music world so it fits within what they deem acceptable. The west Michigan, typical conservative housewife should be the last person on this planet deciding what real art is. You want a conservative, sheltered, insular city? You got it. Now, lets not go around pretending its something it isn't.
We walked through the major venues yesterday to get a prevue of ArtPrize. We met quite a few artists who were installing their pieces. They were from all over the country and in several cases the world, including Brazil, China and jolly ol England.

The reality of ArtPrize, and Grand Rapids proper, is knocking your angry little profiling teeth out, you bigoted troll, and I for one am loving it!

As one of the downtown business owners, and not Dutch or reformed, I can tell you ArtPrize is an incredible event for the local economy. It's an absolute shot in the arm for businesses working through this crappy economy.
Maybe if the two ridiculous haters offering their narrow, bigoted opinions on this thread actually had achieved some level of success in life they'd comprehend the better things in life, like community, diversity, and enjoyment. Instead they just seem like angry, bitter, self-made victims.

Too bad, but it seems they're unwilling to pull themselves out of their crappy attitudes and enjoy life so they have only themselves to blame.

Some people prefer having crappy attitudes and being jealous of what they perceive others to have that don't. Of course, generally, these same people want everything handed to them and don't understand the sense of pride that comes with achievement. Life is too short to be crabby and angry all the time.

Sound like you never stepped out of Kentwood, which is it's own city. We're talking about Grand Rapids. Jobs are as diverse as any other city it's size, and as far as arts and medicine, far more.
Again, in GR, as with most cities it's size, the middle class far outnumber the poor and wealthy classes. Go to the city income level charts and you'll see that. Nationally, the middle class is shrinking, therefore you'd have to expect some of that to happen in Grand Rapids as well.
Weather?? It's Michigan. You're in a Northern climate, surrounded by Great Lakes. It's not going to be sunny and 80 every damn day.
Grief! You guys will whine about everything!
Umm....duh I know that they'r won't be 80 degree days. That's what I'm telling the people. I was born in Grand Rapids but Kentwood and Grand Rapids is heavily connected. I'm not whining I'm just telling it like it is. If you like better weather I would suggest that you don't come here.
To make it you will need to move out of Grand Rapids or it'll hold you back.

Try again...the largest ethnic group of European descent is German followed by Dutch, then English. But there are also sizeable groups of Irish, Polish, French with smaller groups of Swedish and Scottish.
The residents of Grand Rapids that you refer to as 'Mexicans' are groups of either Hispanic or Latino descent (do you know the difference?). People who actually hail from Mexico the country may be one of 56 recognized indigenous cultures but more than half would be Mestizo, a combination of Spanish and Indian.
Other ethic groups found in the Grand Rapids area include, Bosnian, Sudanese, Native American various Asian and Pacific Islanders.
There's a lot more diversity here than you seem to be aware of.
I grew up in west Grand Rapids. All I saw were Mexicans (Latinos) barely and Puerto Ricans. But hey maybe you're right. I'm only going off what I have seen. In Kentwood for sure it is tons of diversity out here. Never seen a Bosnian til I got to Kentwood. Lol

According to the Census, Kentwood has

Caucasian alone 66.3%
Black or African American alone 15.4%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone 0.4%
Asian alone 6.6%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone 0.1%
Two or More Races 3.9%
Hispanic or Latino 8.5%

For Grand Rapids it is:
Caucasian alone, 59.0%
Black or African American alone 20.9%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone 0.7%
Asian alone 1.9%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone 0.1%
Two or More Races 4.2%
Hispanic or Latino 15.6%

Just to bring some facts into the discussion.

Right, and to bring a more in depth fact into the discussion, the majority of white population is Dutch:

http://en.wikipedia.or /wiki/File:Census_Bureau_Dutch _in_the_United_States_2000.png

2. Black is low-income 15th generation Black Americans

3. Hispanic is Mexican Indians

So, GR is Dutch, Black, and Mexican. Ever notice we get the shit ethnic groups that dominate?
Instead of having higher class ethnic groups like Italian, Jamaican or Venezuelan?

He's German. He remembers the stories of his grand father marching in to Holland back in 1940 and the pride his family felt as they put the Dutch in their place.

As a majority-life Grand Rapidian (now at Western Michigan University) currently residing in Kalamazoo, I will say that if you're black, latino, or any other minority, this town will suck serious ass. Detroit is eons better than Grand Rapids in that regard. All the so-called "good suburban schools" is simply codeword for "no visible minorities whatsoever." As a black-male college student, I feel that my hometown was quite lacking in the amount of opportunities for minorities. Grand Rapids is only a good place to live if your Dutch & CRC (Christian Reformed Church) or if your last name is Meijer, VanAndel, or DeVos. I'm definitely moving to Detroit when I graduate from college. GR pisses me off too much. I'd have better chance of success in Detroit being a black entrepreneur than I ever would in Grand Rapids.

Right ... some "black college student" just happens to find his way to a site frequented by like 12 mostly retirement-age people and decides to post an eerily similarly-worded, equally-bigoted anti-white Dutch and CRC rant as GreedRapids.

It's as if it's the same person posting under different names ... hhmmmmm. That's never happened here before :)
