You're in-laws once lived here? Well, maybe you should write the official tour guide of GR then, pal. You sure do have your finger on the pulse!
Do you live in Three Rivers?

GR has two kinds of people. One are the obvious CRC types who are everywhere. They drag their horribly behaved kids to Meijers or restaurants with the mindset that because they are Dutch they are entitled to everything life has to offer.

The other ones are the white trashy types from Wyoming and Kentwood. You know the fat women who drive 200 dollar beaters and have bad attitudes and 4 kids by 3 different fathers?

That pretty much sums up GR.

You forgot the 3rd kind. You know, the judgmental ones who think they are perfect but everyone else is beneath them? Grand Rapids has their share of you here as well.

How about the 4th kind that don't fit either of those 3 molds. The one's that just want to live their life in a good way and not judge others by race, religion or sex. Just the ones that want to live simply. I moved to GR when it was really enhanced by the Dutch CRC mode. I see much more diversity now and I like it better.

I don't disagree with you. I have lived in GR for most of my life and I too see much more diversity than before. some is good and some is bad.

Well, I'm not sure where you get that GR is stuck in the 50's for one. Have you been here recently? Have you been here at all? The cultural activities and diversity downtown alone kick the stuffing out of your comment.

ArtPrize, Beer Capital of the US, VanAndal Arena, Avenue of The Arts, modern museums, state of the art medical facilities, diversity, etc etc ...
And all without a daily ticker tape update of gangbangers shooting each other like larger cities.

If you live here and actually get out of your house you might have a different opinion.

Again didn't I say that the downtown is surprisingly nice? When i said "Stuck in the 50s" I meant from the pervasive attitude that exists from Dutch CRC power brokers. "Can you believe Joe VanderPoop was actually mowing his yard on sunday? thats the Lords day." So don't deny those antiquated feelings exist.

Your comments are so funny, yes u have nice museums, the med mile, art prize...things that make GR stand out over similarly sized cities. You also have your fair share of gangbangers. I'm not sure where u live but the in laws live south and occasionally I'll take division st to downtown. Need I say more? There are plenty of criminal unsavory activities happening in GR. you can talk about the good things, but don't have your head in the sand when it comes to the backwards political leanings of the region and a inhospitable feeling towards those that dare not to CRC or one of their dozen or so splinter religions just in west mich

Sounds like it's you who have an agenda against Christian Reformed people and VanAndel.
Backwards political leanings? Define please.

Inhospitable feelings from CRC folks? Examples??

"Splinter religion"??

Appears you're anti-religion. You're sounding more and more like a previous contributor on this site who took his ball and went home. Arctic, is that you under a different name perhaps??:)

Methinks you have an issue with religion. It's your opinion to which you are entitled, however, there are many more religions in West Michigan these days than CRC or even RCA. Drive down East Paris Avenue off the Beltline sometime. Of course, that would mean you might have to admit your opinion on Grand Rapids might be incorrect.

Very Grand Rapidian of you and "really". Because I think it is backwards logic to talk about those folks who now their grass on Sunday and believe GR is far right leaning, I'm all of a sudden anti-religion....oh okay I'm a product of parochial education and my children are attending parochial schools and we attend church weekly. So, again get your facts straight w/out making false accusations.

DRC -> RCA -> CRC -> United Reformed Church, NA Presbyterian and Reformed, Orthodox Christian Reformed, Protestant Reformed, Willow Creek, Ada Bible, and possible Mars Hill, but I could be wrong about the last 2.

I'm not going to get into the inhospitable feelings from CRC, I'd rather not turn this into "my religion is better/worse than yours" forum. Anyone can read the Heidelberg Catechism for why their members may be inhospitable towards other religions.

In other words you have no actual evidence of "inhospitable" behavior by CRC people in GR, but that won't stop you from flinging insults anyway.

"May Be" inhospitable?? lol ... The only people that seem to be inhospitable around here are those who have a problem with religion.

Plus, have heard of grata/rapid bus racism and have seen anti-catholicism and homophobia first hand.

Dude, you do not have a clue, first off you tell me my in laws no longer live in GR, you asked me if I have even been to GR...I think my comments prove that I have been to GR for business and visiting family plenty over the past 15 yrs. You claim there is no gang bangers in GR, which is soooo funny. Then you accuse me of having an "agenda" again the CRC and asked for splinter religions...I addressed that. Now you need examples of "inhospitable people" in GR which I showed earlier.

You believe I "flung" insults....I think I am speaking the truth. Again, as far as religion is concerned I have no issues w/ anyone's religious beliefs. I have an issue with a region that views people who have counter beliefs as below them. If you do not see that then again you have your head in the sand. I guess I am not the only one that feels this way as the CRC is losing membership greatly in the past 20 years.

You are right there. Many people prefer denominations that tolerate sin, deny hell, figure the ten commandments were misguided suggestions that no longer apply. And where has that attitude gotten us? If your church doesn't stand for anything there's no point in going unless its just a social club.
And don't accuse me of being CRC. I am and I'm proud of it.

First off GR is not a larger city. Secondly GR has gangs all over the SE side but I'm sure you never venture out that way so in your world they don't exist. Thirdly there is no diversity downtown. Just more of the same, dominated by people with last names that start with Van, De or end with ema. Every thing you mentioned outside of beer city USA is owned, run by or has the name of two families. Wow, what diversity! And the whole beer city USA thing is an absolute joke. How GR got that title is beyond me. Everyone in the country knows Portland Oregon (a real larger city) yet only Midwesterners know about GR. Portland Oregon has 51 breweries in the city and 69 total in the metro area. GR has 15 in the metro area. Am I missing something?

LOL if you think the CRC types are welcoming and loving to outsiders then you're either one of them or you're an idiot. It's part of what makes GR such a crap hole and keeps it from growing beyond its current size. The rest of the country isn't rude to strangers and they actually teach their kids to say thank you and show appreciation. The Dutch CRC types are only nice when money gets involved. Money they get from Jesus for being such good Christians.

Sounds rather judgmental, doesn't it? I never took shots at the religion itself only the pervasive feeling I get when I am in town.
