In Michigan, under SafeLink Wireless, a qualified individual gets a free phone and 68 minutes/month. The other qualifiers are here:

Some of the qualifiers make it reasonably easy to get into the program.

I am opposed to this free phone program because it is so widely abused.
I work with several people (that's right I said work)who have the free gov't phones because they are so easy to get.
If abuse isn't reported, it will likely go undetected.
Have you reported these people that are scamming the system?

Hell no it's not a good idea! If the poor want a cell phone they should get a job! Tired of all these government handouts. Pretty soon there will be no disctinction between someone with a job paying his own way and some POS living off the system getting everything for free. Why don't we give the poor free cars while we are at it also. They probably could use a vaction too.
Spanksock,

They already have government programs that give welfare rats free cars. I know this first hand because I knew someone that qualified for it and received a car. This same person hasnt worked in 10 years and has no reason not. She has utilities paid, rent paid and gets the bridge card with groceries provided. She sits at home and smokes a carton of kools every two days and contributes nothing to society. Oh and for awhile she was getting SSI disability for a child that had adhd. The kid was on the honor roll all through middle school and so far in high school. WTF!

Don't know why yet, but I voted yes.

I say mabye 80% of the phones would be used for the good, the other 20% will just use them for dealing drugs, or non useful things.

OR mabye even terrorists will join the plan.

they already have access to it. You use any cell phone that can power up and you can dial 911, thats all you need. That is free and accessible already.

<quoted text>I tend to agree. AT&T offers home phone service for as little at $13.75 a month. That's pretty cheap even for someone living at 150% of the poverty level...

When you have nothing then $13.75 would make a person feel like they had hundreds. I hope you are never in the same shape as some of the people you are talking about, or better yet maybe you should be then you would know what its like to be in need.

I worked hard as hell, ever since i was 12. When will the people of this country grow tired of supporting those who refuse to contribute to a democratic society?

Go Blue,

First I am sickened that I have to address you by that name because I am a State fan. Its not in my vocab to say the words Go and Blue together. Anyway I agree with you and am a huge believer in personal accountability and responsibility. People get where they are in life because of their own choices. Point Blank. No excuses and no blaming others. I am also tired of the liberal majority finding new ways to tax those that work and give to those that contribute nothing. Almost makes you wanna say to hell with it all and join welfare. If enough of us are on it, there wont be enough to support it! lol

sparty, your correct of course. But i think you may be wrong about a liberal majority. I am in no way a liberal, yet i voted for Obama as a reaction for my loathing GW, and anyone(McCain) like him....also, tho i am UM guy, my neice graduated MSU, i like both of them, i am all about hating the criminals from OSU.......lol...

That is really well said. I feel that way as well. I've worked since I was 12 and only even had unemployment for a few weeks in my entire life. Lucky? I don't think so. I was willing to take a commission only job to get back to work. How many will do that?

Having said that, I see both sides of this. I have NO desire to keep supporting deadbeats but at some point, having a phone can make the difference between getting called for that manpower job or not. So maybe we are paying either way and I'd rather pay for a phone, then somebody waiting for somebody to 'give them a job'. Maybe the anwer lies somewhere in the middle. Give them a phone for a limited use. Then find a way for them to 'repay it'. I don't know the answer - I don't like either option....

Typical reply. But here's the link with the phone number for welfare fraud.

You're the guy who started a thread about non registered users and that you don't respond to them. You must have changed your mind eh?

I don't think phone abuse fraud counts as welfare fraud.

Many users have said their registered logins no longer work without crashing.

Anything else you want to complain about?

The title of this forum is a misnomer-- There is no such thing as free, someone has to pay.. Honestly I am getting pretty sick of people stealing from me to support themselves.. I have my own family to support..

Not if you finish the sentence 'free cellphones for the poor'. They are 'free' to the poor....

Not everyone abuses those SafeLink phones. I have a friend who is a single lady in her late 40s. She was in a very bad car accident and had major, major surgery on both her legs. She can't work right now and is living on whatever is left of the settlement she received from the other driver, as it was his fault.

She is a very honest person, goes to my church and we are both in a care group together. The only phone she has is some program for emergencies only where she gets 15 free minutes monthly. I told her about SafeLink and she is going to go to the library, get on the computer and check it out.

She would not be a person who would stand in line at the grocery store cashier and blab on the phone while paying for all her junk food with a Bridge Card - no this person is very honest and having an extremely difficult time.

I hope she gets a SafeLink phone!
