I feel it necessary to intervene here as you are trying to paint a rather false rosy picture...
There were 800,000 people affected by this mess in the D.C. area.
They did not drive to work so gas station money was lost.
They did not stop for coffee or doughnuts so money was lost.
They did not use the Public Transportation so money was lost.
They did not use Public Parking so money was lost.
They did not take their family out for supper so money was lost.
They did not go out for a few drinks so money was lost.
The list can go on and on...not everyone diverted to another way to spend their money, in fact most hunkered down and spent minimal money because of the bleak outlook.
That and a huge number of people will never see a penny from all of this as they work for gov't contractors who will get nothing from all of this.
Wake up...please.
Thank you, at least you gave a response rather than an insult. I'm not trying to paint a rosy picture, but Obama and the "economists" said that given our spending on the stimulas we would never reach 8% unemployment and we would return to 5% by July 2013. And having worked with government folks, a 12 year old could do better.

While I agree that there was an impact, first I don't think it was as bad as these 5% economist make it out to be and second, we found out there is a lot of waste in the government as more people did NOT notice a difference in their life versus those who did (and many of those who did were purposely inconvienced like the veterans on the mall).

You mentioned several things so let's think about them.
"They did not drive to work so gas station money was lost." Sorry but that doesn't work. Lots of people work from home during the week but their gas consumption actually goes up because they end up running errands, picking up the kids, etc. Again, this assumes that these people were locked in their house which is BS. Their life went on.

"They did not stop for coffee or doughnuts so money was lost." Nope, some probably didn't stop for coffee or donuts but because they were home they went out for lunch and spent more. Again, we have history that shows that spending on things like gas, food, etc. actually goes up when people don't commute. What goes done is their annual spend on office things like suits, ties, etc.

"They did not use the Public Transportation so money was lost." Hell, even Mussolini got the trains to run on time. Yes some business was lost but then again, a lot of those who were not at work have passes because they always use them, so that money is already spent.

"They did not use Public Parking so money was lost." Agree, but how many people in Grand Rapids didn't use public parking because of the shut-down. Using DC as an example doesn't work since it is out of whack in a lot of areas because of the government. Was DC overly impacted? Of course. When an earthquake hits CA is DC impacted? No.

"They did not take their family out for supper so money was lost." Why not? The government didn't close their bank accounts. They were still getting paid and there was never any discussion about not giving workers their pay, so everyone knew they were going to get a normal paycheck. So if you were given a two week paid vacation you're telling me you would just sit at home watching TV and eating grilled cheese? BS.

"They did not go out for a few drinks so money was lost." Actually in the article I posted they mentioned that liquor sales went way up so bars, liquor stores and other places did even better.

Again, I'm not saying it wasn't bad. I'm saying it wasn't a disaster for the economy. Things shifted but very little actually went away. Think about this. There are two fewer weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Do you think that people are going to spend less on Christmas this year because they have two fewer weeks to shop?

Regarding your last paragraph...I've been driving 395 into D.C. every Tuesday for 7 years. The last 2 Tuesdays were by far the lightest traffic ever, even lighter than holidays. The people who were furloughed were most certainly staying at home and watching TV. Probably cursing at the idiots in congress.
Could be. And since they were getting a two week PAID vacation, if that is what they were doing, then they are really stupid and should be let go and second, no one noticed they were gone so their job should be eliminated.

Sure I'll go. Or I'll send a HS student or even a middle school student. Maybe a few hundred million housewives. As I keep saying, money "lost" today isn't "lost" tomorrow. Can't you understand that simple concept? Think about all the people who live paycheck to paycheck. Week to week their expenses change. They spend a little more one week and a little less the next. But at the end of the year all their money is basically gone. And guess what? It happens again the next year, and the next and the next. The money they save in one week gets spend in the next. They don't burn it in the fireplace. Millions of people every year get a paid vacation and wonders of wonders, they don't just not spend the money. Even people who do staycations end up spending the money on their home, wardrobe, entertainment, etc.

And yes, DC was hit unusually hard because it is where the government is. Did Wichita lose $200M/day? I doubt it. And what about the flip side? How much does GR bring in because people are eating out in DC? Exactly how much money comes into GR, or Battle Creek because someone is spending the night in a hotel in DC?

If anything, DC is arguing that the government should be broken up and spread around the country so that one city isn't relient on the government for their existence.

Your whole response was lost on just one comparison...you used Grand Rapids as your basis...I used D.C. and the surrounding area. There is no comparison...no parallel, not even close.
I realize where you are coming from because I lived in West Michigan for over 50 years...and then moved here to the D.C. area. You have no idea what you are talking about...and I mean that in a nice way...come here and live and see and experience what the core feels like. Unless you've been here you can't know what it's like.

Yes, it's going to, and will, impact a lot of people here...a good portion of the 800,000 that will not get paid for the 2+ weeks they did not work. I used to think I knew what you think you know until I came here...try it...

Way to go, T-Baggers. Score one!
When George W. Bush was first inaugurated on Jan. 20, 2001, the total debt of the federal government was $5,727,776,738,304.64. When Bush left office on Jan. 20, 2009, the total debt of the federal government was $10,626,877,048,913.08. Thus, in George W. Bush’s two terms the total debt of the federal government increased $4,899,100,310,608.44. That works out to $11,776,683,438.96 per week.

As I'm typing this, the national debt is at $16,964,779,101,345.00. That means it has gone up by $6,337,902,052,432.00 during the 247 weeks Obama has been in office. That's $25,659,522,479.48 per week.

So if we didn't spend the $24B during the two weeks, that's not such a bad thing given that Obama pisses that away in 1/2 the time.

Sure, but given they worship at the O-lter I doubt I or anyone who disagrees with the divine one will get on.

And again, if this was really so horrible, than give some examples of folks, here in Grand Rapids, not DC that truly lost loads of income because of this. Otherwise admit it was a PR play by the politicians and find something else to talk about.
