<quoted text>as long as we continue to pay your salary, we have a right to our opinions. your not the only ones to face death head on during a days work. so get off you high horse and be thank full that you went home that night. as for the officer. he swore to up hold the law. period! he did what he promised he would do in the face of danger. he gave his life to protect another. thats his job! thats all it is, a job! no one held a gun to his head and said you have to join the police force. he did it of his own free will. he knew that his decision to join could and may change his life and those around him. this was the risk he was willing to take. as for the new police chief, this is not the way to prove your tough on crime or your staff. dont use it to make a name for yourself. you have earned the right to run the show. dont blow it by doing stupid things like this. as for the comment by unknown, your mouth is bigger than your balls,so go sit down and draw the pension were paying you!
Hey if your paying my salary could I please get a raise!! and unless you were there that night and had to deal with what those officers had to deal with in a spilt second I think you should shut your mouth!!

Amen, and I would give you a raise. I am one of the bleeding heart liberals that everyone is bad mouthing here. I think that more of our tax dollars should go to police and firefighters (and education.) For services such as these, I gladly pay my taxes. I have to agree with the officers. Many of us make split second decisions every day. Very few of us make those decisions when life or death is on the line. Wouldn't it be a great world if everyone was as perfect as they believe everyone else should be?

As a fellow police officer, I would like to thank Officer Robert Kozminski for the ultimate price he paid on that day. He never knew it would be his last day. Never knew it would be his last call. No civilian will ever know what it is like to respond to that type of call, not only putting yourself in danger, but being responsible for the lives of people... unknown people. You don't know where these people are located at. You don't know what weapons are involved. You don't know which direction is the safest to approach from. But Officer Kozminski laid his life down for your city, unselfishly.
As far as Officer Dwyers, thank you for doing your best. If your best is not good enough for Grand Rapids, they do not deserve you. You made your best decision under stress. God and everyone knows you did your best. They can all evaluate you sitting in their nice plush chairs as they take months to debate the 2 minutes of your life which will forever be changed with the loss of a hero. If all the city mayor can do is say he wishes your chief were black, find another department. He's a racist bigot. If the weak backbone of your new chief can't support the department, find another. Thank you for trying to defend yourself and others. Thank you for not running away from the danger and actually shooting back. All of us in blue will forever wish the bullet obliterated it's target. If your department doesn't care enough to thank you and defend you for your courage and quick thinking, find a better department. There are many.... I, for one, thank you.
WOW what a post....
I agree with you. He IS better than that city deserves.

Good riddance to Dwyer. GR doesn't need any hothead cops firing guns off just because they are ticked off. Dwyer was just itching to shoot his gun off and did, even though vanvals was already in custody. Then he lied about it. His credibility is forever gone. The GRPD finally has done something right and fired him. The only thing the GRPD did wrong in this case is not charge him with a crime. The GRPD and the community is better off without trigger-happy liar Dwyer.

You may want to rewrite your first sentence in this article. It sounds like you are blaming Officer Dwyer for the death of Officer Kozminski. I personally would like to read the truth, not opinion.
THANK YOU soooooo much, as I am reading through these posts, I wondered with all the opinions, who would notice the article at the top. There are several pages that I wanted to get through before I posted, but I had to Thank You for your post. It seems that so many opinions have been formed just because of the freedom to punch keys or it seems so many are fish posting for others opinions but until I read your post, I wondered how many people noticed that this statement seems to imply that the fired officer fired the fatal shot. My question originally was, If Officer Dwyer caused the death of Officer Kozminski, then why wasn't he charged with murder in court instead of just losing his job? All I have left to say is R.I.P. OFFICER KOZ, GOD BLESS OUR GUARDIANS IN BLUE, and the families of both officers. I wasn't there but I don't understand what happened because of all the kaos but I DO understand that a life was lost and a baby girl will never again see her DAD. My heart and prayers go out to Officers KOZ's Mom and Dad, his fellow officers, and the rest of his and his daughter's families.

It is sad to lose a life no matter what. yet while you are sitting here defending police officers when you have no idea the things they have done good or bad. i have had my own run in with them and because of my skin color they charged me with domestic and line cutting. while my younger brother who is of lighter skin then me did worse things, like actually hittting and choking me and other family memebers he was released with no charges or charges dropped. i offered no resistance to the officers they treated me with disrespect and force that was not needed. I am a good person never in my life have I ever broken the law, me getting mad and throwing papers around and stopping my mom from stabbing me with a fork and trying to break my glasses caused for me to get arrested. GRPD is curupted and racist. 3 months ago i never would have said this, but after the treatment i recieved i have changed my postion. i think that investigations need to be done along with firing of any officer who violates civil rights and uses force that is not needed. (sorry for any spelling errors)

Youre right, GRPD is like a little blue uniformed city within a bigger city and I agree that they are corrupt. Theyve been like this since forever and they should really clean house to get rid of all the bad ones, but if they did that, there wouldn't be much of a police department left. GRPD consists of arrogant pathetic losers who think they are respected and who think they do no wrong. Sad.
