Miguel Cabrera has let down his team, his fans, his family and most of all, himself.

I'm afraid that it's just a matter of time before Cabrera fall off the wagon again. In his press conference when he showed up at training camp yesterday he refused to acknowledge the seriousness of his substance abuse problem by denying that he's an alcoholic. In overcoming a substance abuse problem the first and most important step is to admit that you have a problem. Cabrera's belief that this was just an isolated episode and not indicative of a drinking problem does not bode well for the prospect of him keeping himself out of trouble in the future. He may very well turn out to be yet another case of a talented athelete who saw their career destroyed by their inner demons.

He'll lead the team in RBI's and home runs again. Quite a career-destroyer!

Provided he doesn't fall off the wagon again. He's been warned by Major League Baseball that he will face severe consequences if he gets in trouble again. I understand that his treatment plan involves hiring someone to "shadow" him and keep him out of trouble. Hopefully that will help. But he's still at risk of getting into trouble again if he's not willing to see incidents like this DUI as anything but separate incidents. There's a thread running through them that he's got to understand is there.

What they understand is he can hit the shit out of a baseball. Ballplayers have traditionally been rule-breakers, drinkers and free-spirits. They play ball, entertain us, and in return make loads of money. If the guy wants to drink like a fish he's going to.

And if he gets another DUI, or worse causes fatalities or serious injuries in an accident he causes because of his drinking like a fish, he will be punished severely by Major League Baseball. You can bet on that. His atheletic talents will not spare him if he falls off the wagon again.

Why not?
It worked for Ray Bentley.

Different sport, different time. The leagues today are much more vigilant about substance abuse issues and more inclined to punish those who get themselves in trouble because of it.

When did Ray Bentley get in trouble and for what? I remember he was in the NFL for several years. He went to two Super Bowls didn't he?
