Mel Trotter is now connected with providing cars to low income families. Who's paying for the sale and repair of all these cars they sell or give away? The tax payer or private sponsors must come out way ahead after " donating" ? I think Mel went from getting a little bit of tax dollars years ago, to getting a lot now. These organizations wouldnt get involved in a such a venture unless someone was benefiting a bunch. It's sad to see. Never any sacrificing anymore, just ways to use up tax dollars. The same thing happened with Goodwill, now they are involved with providing eye care and other things for low income families. When is the Salvation Army going to open it's own medical center or college for low income families? Most of the low income families that qualify these days for any program are Hispanics. I'll bet over half the cars that are " given" away end up in the hands of Hispanics that have come from Mexico. Then when they need repair, in the long run the tax payers get stuck with the bill. Next, Mel will have govt money coming in for school kids or homeless working at the facility. Or Mel will start doing some contracted repair work for govt money instead of the govt doing it all in house to save money. Why are all these people so bent on figuring out ways to get at tax dollars? It never happened years ago like it is now.

Back when I was with the Trotters it was different. Don't rip on Mel Trotter. They are a great organization. Who else can provide a Thanksgiving meal for $1.84?

Mel Trotter has been and remains an organization that is completely NON-Government funded. They accept no Federal Dollars at all. They are supported entirely by local individuals and the donations of dollars and materials such as clothing and yes, vehicles.

The sale of clothing and vehicles all go to support their programing. Those who donate the cars (and other materials) get a tax write off for the dollar amount that the products are sold. IE if a car sells for $2,000, then the donor gets a $2,000 tax write off.

The cars Mel Trotter sells are pieces of junk though. They don't tell you if there is a cracked head in the engine and you find out only 3 months later after you've spent $600 on it. New engine is the only "cure" for that problem. Can't afford that either.

If they're going to sell such pieces of crap, then they should check them over better and repair stuff like that before they sell them.

Plus, the prices in their thrift store are at least 2 times higher than the Bibles for Mission Thrift stores and also Goodwill. I would prefer to shop the Mission Thrift stores and Goodwill before Mel Trotter's store.

I agree with you 99.99% Would've been perfect, except the letter I just got from Rev. Daniels said the cost for a Thanksgiving meal was $1.92

Its a great cause that should be supported for the other 364 days as well.

I'd be interested to see anything that backs up your accusations. Anything at all...

The reason I'd like to know is because I let them have my Thanksgiving turkey every year. If Mel Trotter is the parasite you are claiming they are, I will find someone else to give it to.

Thank you, you are a fine citizen and contributor to the community.

Why not let the kids at KCTC work on these donated vehicles. Not only are they getting tech training in h.s. but are providing an assistance to their community as well

I like shopping at the Mel Trotter store, if you're good at digging you can usually find a good deal.

The Bibles for Missions store, Valueland, Salvation Army on Division, and the Goodwill on Division downtown GR is nice too, but the neighborhood is a little scary.

GR has a lot of really great thrift stores all over town- makes a fun day trip.

I buy pretty much all my families clothing and household stuff this way, I certainly can't knock on Mel Trotter- without that store and the other ones, we'd never have anything.

There is a real nice Salvation Army store on 28th street in Kentwood next to the Flowerland store. Kind of near Art Van Furniture store too. It's huge too.

I like the Mel Trotter store too, though I haven't been to it since they moved mostly because I couldn't find it. But now I know where they are.

God wants us 2 love each other the way he loves us! But where human, so at times its a challenge! Mel has the right intentions for the car program. And its the governments problem that 2 many hispanics are here not mels! But neverless God loves them is much as he does us! I bought a car from mel trotter. Personal oppinion it was way over priced but they did try 2 fix the car when it broke down. FREE OF CHARGE! Really cant complain. I would not go there again though! i feel for there type of program, families with low income deserve some warrenty. A good peace of mind. That might be the only car they can by for years to come. and heads up! The program accepts vouchers from the state/DHS for the purchase of there cars. The State cuts them a check!

you are a racist piece of shit.

mel trotter is self sufficient from the government. if you had taken all of 30 seconds to read their complete fiscal reports (which are public and available on there website) you would know that you are in fact a dumbass.

thank you for continuing to perpetuate hate.

its 2011. racism will not be tolerated ever again.

when you get a car from mel trotter, have they checked the car over completely, will they tell you exactly what is wrong with it and since its being bought by a low income person is it a low price? They can't afford to buy the car and put $2000.00 back into it after it breaks down in a month.
