Studio 28 may be closing

Full story: WOOD-TV Grand Rapids and Michigan

We have been receiving a series of tips the past few weeks and have been working ever since to get confirmation of the possible closure.

It's sad to see an icon of the community go. I've seen many movies there. But...since that area is not the best part of town, and I like the theater at Rivertown better, I don't go there anymore.

The company that I work for does a lot of work with Meijers. Studio 28 is closing and Meijer's is buying the property and a new Meijers is going there.
I find that highly unlikely as the basic land requirements of a Meijer store far exceed what is available at the Studio 28 site just in terms of parking. The smallest footprint of a Meijer store exists at Kalamazoo and 28th Street and Fred Meijer doesn't build small stores anymore.

DITTO! Had my first date with my now husband there!

Yes, North Wyoming is really going downhill. We moved out of there 4 years ago & that was apparently just in time in that particular neighborhood.(Something about the news reporter standing in your old driveway talking about gang violence & shootings...hmmm.)
But but BUT the city council would have you think Wyoming was East Grand Rapids! When we were residents, we thought they were a bunch of folks with too much time on their hands - sitting around making ridiculous ordinances.

But anyway, I think they could make it into an interactive museum of the history of theaters & cinnema. But perhaps that would be too innovative & creative.:-(

I hope they consider (if it's even possible) relocating the screen & sound system from theater #1.

OH the memories...

I used to love that place, until the gangs came in. We stopped going there about 5 yrs ago. You couldn't walk through the lobby without feeling like you were going to get your a@@ kicked.
The pieces of sh*t teen gangbangers killed that place!!!

What would really be great is to find out in the press conference that they are just going to re-model the place. That way, once again, WOOD would have to eat crow. Always try to make news when there isn't any yet.

Maybe the other theaters will have enough guts to throw out those thugs, homeboys...etc. that are causing trouble.
It stands to reason that it is unlikely that they will have enough guts to do that, considering the fact that the same people who own/run Studio 28, own/run the other theaters.

I do know that the same issues at Studio 28 will arise in other places after November 24th.

Sad to see this icon go. The Loeks family has done this to themselves by opening all those other theaters around town. They are hurting a local landmark just to make the bigger bucks on a fancier looking building (so they can charge more). A simple renovation would've gone a long way. Personally I don't care for the new theaters as they are more about the spectacle of the building then the quality of the theater.

They did their homework first. I doubt they just decided to create a story out of this for no reason just to irritate people like you and lose credibility with the public, despite what you might think.
Homework? Actually, while WOOD thrives on hearsay and hype, other, more responsible news outlets, wait for a legitimate source to report it as hard news. Anyone remember the "Mystery Development"? It's not always about being the first and most obnoxious...as Suzy snuffed that opportunity right out.

In addition, other stations also take time to consider grammar and factual accuracy in their reporting. Avoiding run on sentences: "The Loeks family owns Celebration Cinema... as well as Portage, Muskegon and Lansing, and runs Studio 28." What about Benton Harbor? At least in this story no expressways were mentioned, or they'd likely have told us Studio 28 is located off of "US 31".(Which for those of you who don't understand the significance, US 31 does not traverse Grand Rapids or Kalamazoo as WOOD commonly reports)

But I digress...

Why all the fuss over a movie theatre? There's theatre's on every block now and I don't go to any one of them. Between the ridiculous prices (and alot of theatre's are eliminating the matinee shows) the way overpriced pop and food along with all the rude people watching movies, talking, being on their phones, crunching on food, digging around in the candy wrappers, people thinking you should move down to make a seat even though you got their plenty early to get the seat you wanted, etc, etc, there's no longer any joy in going to a movie. Go with Netflix and just get the movies sent to your house, it's cheaper, quieter and more fun to spend that time with your family.

from the article...

"Jack Loeks put Grand Rapids on the national map by inventing the complex, which opened in 1965 as the first 12-screen theater."

Not true. Even in the mid to late '70's Studio 28 was a two screen theater with the huge theater one and the smaller theater two. It had miniature golf and a trampoline "park" out front and the Beltline Drive In next door. Also a Mr. Steak tucked in up front between the Studio and the Drive In.

They own those as well. So there is no competition from outside companies. Its just that that location doesn't seem to be doing as well as other so they decided to close.

It doesn't help matters that the area seems to be going downhill somewhat.

Maybe the should take notes from the theatre in Plainwell...$3.50 tickets after 5 and $2.50 before...all current movies...and resonable snack prices...I can go with my family of 4 get tickets and popcorn and snacks for everyone for less than $20 b/f 5 and less than $25 after 5....better than the $35 I paid a couple of weeks ago to take my daughter to a celebration Cinnema to see HSM3 and get pop and popcorn...and that was just for 2 of us....quit robbing people and maybe they will come more often.

...just a matter of time before the Applebee's across the street closes up shop too.

Studio 28 needed to go as it had really gone downhill in past years. I will miss the nostalgia of it - I'm sure I'm not alone in saying I had my first date with my husband there years ago.

Farewell old gal.

Oh, I HATE that when they don't proofread before putting articles on the site. I mess up to, but they don't give us an edit button here. I've emailed them many times about grammatical or spelling errors. They're supposed to be professionals! Oy.

Hey, Mama Sez...people not of color can rob and rape too. Be careful about stereo-types.

Yes that was the first movie I ever saw at the studio too. What made it special was I was like 6 and my sister was going to Ferris at the time and brought me and her friend from college and she was a absolute babe and treated me like I was her date through the whole movie/night. Man was I P.O.'D when my oldest brother started dating her, lol. My first 6 yr old crush on a ferris hottie!

So sad. My husband and I love going to the movies and it is right by our house.(I know it says farmington hills when I post but that isn't true we live in Wyoming) We went so frequently they they knew us by name. It was nice because it wasn't overcrowd with mallrats. Very sad for Wyoming.

I hope you and Bossman lose your jobs so that you know what it feels like to not have a lot of money or material things and maybe this will help you realize America isn't made up of just rich, white people and that others aren't as fortunate.
