Actually I LIVE just outside of Saranac- which by the way, there is a nasty old trailer park right smack dab in the middle of, correct?. Not by 'choice', though. I hate it. It is a complete hole. Take a drive down Darby and tell me that the homes on that road are nice. Single wide broken trailers with cars and junk littering everywhere. Then continue on into town past the house that has nothing but junk comepletely, and I mean compeltely, filling their front yard. Then go thru town, past all the closed up shops, the bars, and old run down vacant buildings. Drive thru all the streets in t own and see the crap in peoples yards, run down houses, etc. Ive never known a t own to allow trailers in there, let alone allow people to keep so much crap on their property.
As I said, there is nothing good about that whole area. The whole drive between Saranac and Ionia is filled up with even more broken down single wide trailers, borken down cars, junk, etc. It a welfare and drug user haven.
I dont have to know what I am talking about to point this out. All it takes is for a 'normal' person from a nice, average town to drive thru these places and see for themselves. People dont need to take my word for it. They can see it with their own eyes!

Thanks for lumping every citizen of Ionia County into a group of poor junkies that live in trailers. I suppose you think we all live on welfare and have 6 kids from 6 different fathers, too. It is so nice to think we've come so far in our views of society. I bet its hard for you to believe we actually have running water and toilets that flush in our houses. I even have one of those fancy computers to type this response on. WOW. Don't comment on what you don't know. You are an idiot!

Well, I am not joking about it. The comment "Only in Ionia" was referring to the fact that drugs run rampant in that town, and it is so trashy of a place that it is no surpise someone would O.D in the Walmart parking lot.
Ionia is filled with drugs, poverty, welfare using people with run down houses and trailers. Same goes for pretty much all the towns around it (for instance, Saranac). That whole area is the armpit of Michigan.
I really have a problem with this because I live AND work in Ionia. Just because you've been there maybe once doesn't give you the right to make claims like that. And so what if Ionia isn't the most high class place in the world. I'm glad that I live there and not in some hell hole of a city where gangs kill each other.
And she left a suicide note, so she did it on purpose, she wasn't a nobody junkie that od'd. And her sister is a teacher at the middle school there.
I was just really offended by this whole thing. Don't get me wrong, I've known my share of druggies, which were worthless nobodys. But to say that drugs run our town is way out of line.
And not all houses in Ionia are run down trashy trailers. When was the last time you were there? the 70's? Jesus. Yeah, there are some, but out in the country, not in the center of town where any one can drive by and see.
So how about only making insensitive comments about places you know something about.

Sure they are trying to make it look like Ionia is getting better to those coming right off the highway with brand new meijers, walmart, restaurants. But then again, you have to pass 'Shirleys back door'& tons of abandoned homes to get to even that 'nice' part of town.
Fact is, you can polish a t*rd all you want, but it will always be a t*rd.

You actually have to go south of the highway to pass those places, ass

Agreed... but..

Again...

Ok I live in Ionia too and yea ok, there are some questionable areas NOT unlike ANY other city in ANY other state of this entire country. Get off the main drag for once and you will see that it's actually not a bad little town. My question is how did this story turn into a debate about what town is better then any other when a woman has died?

Trust me- I would if I could - I have been trying- but houses dont exactly sell easily out there due to how 'nice and quaint' those communities are. I could just abandon my property like so many people around there have, but that is not the right thing to do, is it.

The vast majority of the people who live in and around Saranac & Ionia are people who were born and raised there. I honestly dont know of one person who moved to Saranac from a different, nice community and like it. I DO know of many people who were born and raised there and see no problem with it, they love it. It takes coming from a nice community with lots of involvement and homes whos owners take pride in what they own (which is reflected in how they take care of their homes) to see how bad communities are whose residents dont care if they have yards full of junk or broken down trailers in the city limits. Empty downtowns and the only places to eat are dirty grimy bars. People there are more concerned about the 'government' telling them what to do than actually making their homes and their town a nice place to live, where people from outside the community actually wish they could live there.

Downtown Saranac= 3 nasty bars, 1 laudromat, 1 Dollar General which partially fills a vacant gorcery store building that sat empty for almost 3 years, 2 gas stations, 1 library that is never open, 1 old gross pizza place, and some other random misc. small businesses.

And no matter which way one drives into town, they will pass numerous yards full or junk, misc broken down vehicles, many old run down trailers. One cant even give out of town visitors a different way to escape the 'scenery' on their way in. Every single entrance is marred with homes of people who see nothing wrong with living like slobs.

So again, it doesnt take me telling how crappy the Saranac Ionia area is... people can see for themselves. And to outsiders, it is a place they dont typically want to visit, let alone live.

Sorry for my soapbox stance on that area. I am just a frusterated area 'resident' who hates to see how beautiful those communites COULD be but arent- and wont be anytime soon. I hate to hear how people - 'lifers'- see nothing wrong with how deteriorated their communites are. Its like they are blind to what is around them. It really could be a nice area- heck, its 20 minutes out of GR and should be THRIVING like Rockford or Caledonia. But it sits there, stagnant. No one wants to move there because they are able to open their eyes and see what they would be getting themselves into.

This story does not surprise me. Have you ever sat in the Walmart parking lot waiting for someone who is in the store. I have because I will not go in a Walmart store. Not all but many of these stores attrack a certain kind of people and it is scary.

Where did you hear that she left a suicide note from? Is it a rumor floating around, or did you hear it straight from a family member? I was a friend of hers and attended her funeral and haven't heard anything about that. Last I had heard they still don't know exactly what had happened to her.

It sucks that she died the way she did, I don't know her history but unfortunately the press writes it up as she was a junky that overdoses. Was it intentional, accidental or did someone do it to her? As for Ionia......I have no comment, every town has their bad areas, I am not sure what the argument is there.
As for the joking that is just the way people try to lighten the situation and the fact that everyone is tired of the same old stories of people overdosing so when one comes along that is a little different people are going to react.
I feel bad for her kids, I hope they find peace and realize the consequences of drugs.

Get a sense of humor?????? what the heck..im sorry but US normal people dont find any humor when it comes to a death...i hope one day all you rude people will wake up and realize that life isnt so bad,it only what you make of it....
enough said!!!
So tell me Deb.
Hundreds of people die every second of every day. Do you spend your whole life moping around in sadness with your "That's so sad" and your "My prayers are with you" comments for all these souls?
When members of my family die we have wakes where everyone is telling funny stories and (yes) cracking jokes about this thing called life. It's far better than moping aroung feeling sorry for everything in your miserable existence.
By the way, I made myself a very, very, good life. Great job, 2 (fuel efficien)cars and own 2 duplexes (It's great having renters pay your way)
Gotta go now.
Someone just died and I need to write some new material.
