Explain the utopia of Detroit with that logic, will you?

They were arrested and charged in juvenile court. The prosecutor charged them with lesser crimes because they had no prior records and had never been in trouble with the law before. They also did not penetrate the victims with their body parts, but with other objects. I personally believe the "boys will be boys" philosophy came into play. Can you imagine what would have happened if 4 boys had held down a girl repeatedly at school and penetrated her, and rubbed their naked genitals in her face? As the mother of both boys and a girl, I don't find it more acceptable because it happened to boys. I do not want that kind of behavior or the attitudes that pooh pooh it in my district.
Rape is not about sex to the abuser. It is about power and these boys terrorized the victims and those who knew about it but were too afraid to say anything. Apparently, it had been going on for a few months before someone finally told.
Unwanted s.e.x.u.a.l contact with penetration--even if by foreign objects--is considered AT LEAST CSC in the 3rd Degree under Michigan Compiled Laws. I'd say that the Ottawa County Prosecutor frakked up big time in not having these little scumbags tried as adults--and needs to be tossed out on his a$$ when he comes up for reelection. Where there's a law, it's his job to enforce it. Where there's a crime, it's his to prosecute it. Where there's a victim, it's his job to speak for that victim. He did none of these--he just gave a priviledged few a free pass and a false sense of their own invulnerability, not to mention a town and it's schools a black eye.

Further consider that a teacher at another school was fired for going up to the line without crossing it, should these boys be reinstated? I don't think so. You don't put the perp back in school with his victim. As another poster said, what if the victim had been a girl? The uproar we would hear now would be unreal. This is one case where ZERO tolerance is acceptable, IMO. I would not want rapists in school with my children.

I think it's great that we (the taxpayers) GIVE 13 years of FREE education to any child who wants it.

I don't think I want to let these criminals have any more of our FREE education. If they want more, they or their parents can pay for it, not us.

I'm patiently waiting to see somebody post something about the results of tonight's meeting. At least, thet's what someone posted last night, that it would be decided tonight.

The Board is schedulling a special meeting for Mon. June 9, 2008 for the purpose of student reinstatement hearings. The time of the meeting will be determined and posted by May 30 at the Ad. Bldg. Last night quite a few supporters of the victims attended the meeting and 4 people rose to speak asking the board NOT to reinstate the boys next fall. After the meeting, we stayed and spoke with a board member and expressed our dismay in the whole process so far. We have begun an email campaign asking for letters to the board be sent to Supt. ONeils office. I have spoken to MANY people who do NOT want these boys reinstated, but the Board MUST hear them, or we may be terribly upset on June 9. Please Coopersville residents, email everyone you can and ask them to support the victims in this matter, not the abusers.

koneill@coopersville.k12.mi.us

Please folks, don't wait for others to do it. Your note to him can be short and sweet. They all count. Just let the Board know how you feel about these boys walking the halls and playing ball with their victims again.

How about if they were alien with five eyes?? We could speculate all day.
Their period of expulsion is up. Therefore they're going to go in front of the board to see if they can be allowed back into school. They did the crime, they've done their time. I'm sure they're different kids because of it, as are their victims-just as in ANY other crime that is committed.
This wasn't ANY other crime. It was an ongoing sexual assault that began during the wrestling season and continued into the baseball season. These boys committed multiple sexual assaults against many children and therefore they are a threat to the other children in the district. Perhaps you can afford to be cavilier with your children's safety but I can not. I wouldn't tolerate sex offenders in my home and I surely will not stand by silently and watch them be reinstated into their school. The staff failed to protect the kids at that school from these perpetrators once. Can we be sure they won't fail in that regard again? I've heard that the coaches knew something was going on and did nothing to stop it. It would be foolish to allow the reinstatements to take place. It sends a message that the inconvenience of a few families to find alternative education for their kids takes priority over the welfare of the many other children in the district. There is no shortage of foolish decisions so I'd encourage everyone to contact the superintendent and school board members with your thoughts.

For all our children, not just the victims, we do not need these families in our school system.

You are right about one thing: there were people that knew what was going on. It's part of that stupid jock-thing "oh, everybody does that". Parents of kids in sports, especially boys, need to get it through their heads that any kind of hazing or bullying or preying on others has to be stopped. This goes for COACHES as well. Some of the worst sportmen I've ever seen are coaches. If they can't act like decent human beings then we may end up losing our sports programs entirely(which might put more money into arts and academics, and not such a bad thing in my opinion).

Even though the prosecutor chose to sugar coat it because the penetration wasn't with their "body parts", it was still rape. People get all up in arms about sex offenders in their neighborhoods, why allow them in the school for their victims to see every day. Since the prosecutor reduced the charges, they probably aren't even on the sex offender list, which is wrong. They refer to this as "hazing", but this is way beyond "hazing". Using that term is sugar coating it.

I believe they were charged with gross indecency, which will not put them on the list.

In my opinion, they are stalling. They were originally supposed to make that decision at last night's meeting. I think that the response they got scared them, but they still want to reinstate them, but don't dare now. If they don't get the same turnout against, they will probably do it June 9. Maybe it's time to consider your votes in the next school board election? Allowing these sex offenders to return to school for their victims to see every day is just plain wrong.

What an injustice to the victims and their families! How sad! And to think, this type of thing has been going on for years.

About 20 years ago at East Kentwood, this sort of thing happened with members of the wrestling team. They would have wrestling practice after school on the same nights that the pool was open for open swimming.

These wrestlers were the popular jocks, and would target the shy girls, would lure them into one of the wrestling rooms and have their buddies stand guard outside the door as a watch while they pinned these girls to the mats and forced themselves on her.

I don't know how many girls this happened to, but one finally came forward to the principal, then two others did as well. None of them knew each other, but all had similar experiences. When the boys were confronted, they laughed it off.

The girls were then told by the principal that he would recommend them not come to the school for open swim anymore. In the meantime, the wrestlers were harrassing the girls in class and in the halls, and the boys were joking about it to their friends, making the shy girls more of an outcast.

It's about power and humiliation. The perpetrators are predators, and should not be allowed back at the school. Let them be the ones to go to an alternative school or something.

I'd like to see WZZM do a follow-up to this story. Many people don't realize how detrimental this series of events has been for the families involved.

I have lived in Coopersville most my life, I and my son both graduated from CHS.....We are totally appalled. This is just not acceptable, I feel they do not need to come back to CHS. Let them learn from their mistakes, we don't want them there, if thats how they want to play. Yes Coopersville is rural, loves the flag, love Jesus and votes any damn way we want to. This doesn't have anything to do with what has happened. These young men made choices, let them live with it.

I spoke with people "in the know" this afternoon and over 100 emails and letters had arrived at the administration Bldg asking that the board NOT reinstate the boys who sexually assaulted their teammates last spring. In fact, the superintendants email address had trouble keeping up with the deluge at one point. Keep them coming folks. The victims families are feeling the support they have deserved all year, and I can tell you they are extremely grateful. Can you imagine having this horrible thing happen to your son and then thinking that no one cared?

I'm glad to hear it! Hopefully people will keep them coming so the victims families can rest a little easier. It has been a hellish year for them.
