I had a terrible experience with Dr. Vanderveen. I had a serious skin issue that needed to be addressed right away. However, Dr. Vanderveen didn't address the problem, was quite rude and unprofessional. I had to go to another doctor for assistance with my skin issue.

So what's the big deal - people change Doctor's all the time for a variety of different reasons...

And since you have no apparent shame in slandering an Excellent Dermotologist for whatever your reasons - you're not going to tell us who you went to instead to correct your serious skin condition?

I appreciate all the opinions. However, I'm giving my opinion, not "slandering an excellant dermatologist." She treated me very rudely, spent little time with me and didn't help resolve my skin condition. I soon found a skilled and kind dermatologist who had no difficulty assisting me. I don't think being treated with respect and receiving quality medical care is too much to ask!

Dr. V is one of the most thorough Dermatologists in town. Sure, her mannerisms aren't very compassionate, especially if you don't take care of your skin, ie, don't stay hydrated, don't cover up and use sunscreen, smoke, etc. Most of the dermatologists in that practice don't care about purely cosmetic issues rather they spend their time on medically significant issues, skin cancers, etc.

That's just my opinion though. Glad you found someone that you like.

Actually, Dr. Vanderveen's office advertises on-line a variety of cosmetic treatments, including Botox and dermal injectables (wrinkle fillers). The assumption that I was there for a "purely cosmetic" issue was incorrect. I was in fact there for a "medically significant issue" and received no assistance.
Additionally, I take great care of my skin. I've been using a broad spectrum sunscreen since I was young. Although, back then avobenzone wasn't around, so I used a zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based sunscreen.
Anyway, I hope that clears up any confusion or questions regarding my original post.
Thanks everyone! Take Care.

I also had a bad experience with Dr. Vanderveen. I thought your review was very accurate regarding her behavior. You are not the only one who had to find another Doctor to receive adewuate treatment.

One should never have to endure intimidation from a physician. There are plenty of kind, compassionate and highly skilled dermatologists in this city. I know, I left E VanderVeen after she tried to intimidate me. I quickly found a highly competent derm that is also, guess what, kind and compassionate and professional.

To Grand Rapids Business Man and BkByer.....thank you for your kind words of support. I didn't think I was the only person Dr. Vanderveen treated cruelly. I'm glad we were all able to find a kind and skilled doctor after our experiences.

I have found this site to be very interesting, I too had a bad experience with Dr Vanderveen several years ago (2008). I was going to see her about my acne. She was so rude, and said some pretty nasty things to me- I would rather not say. I sat there stunned, not believing a physician was speaking to me like this. I finally found the courage to tell her that she was being rude. I got up, grabbed my purse and started to leave. She grabbed my arm and told me to sit she apologized then offered me free samples and sent me on my way. I then paid for that pathetic service. I never did return to that office. A month or so later still upset about this I called her office to report her behavior to the manager. Reading these posts I can see nothing has changed!

She was one of two who did the Mose type of surgery in Michigan at the time. It was needed after I had one of those compassionate physicians in Kalamazoo misdiagnosed the results of his surgery two yrs. before.I believe she saved my life. Some folks need to get "thicker skin" and realize some of these things can become life threatening and straight talk is needed. I have dealt with her for over 15 yrs. She has been both thorough and professional.

Inappropriate and rude behavior from a doctor is an indicator that the doctor is lacking and is major red flag. I saw Dr. Vanderveen and was shocked not only by her behavior, but her inability to move past her issues and do her job effectively. I was in urgent need of an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan for a skin problem that was very serious. However, she entered the office with anger and disdain. I explained with kindness, what the issue was and that I hoped she could help. She failed to do a careful examination and was unwilling to attempt to develop a diagnosis and treatment plan. That's her job. Instead of doing that, she treated me like dirt, uttered a few unkind comments and slammed out. I've never experienced anything like her...I am surprised she's still in business.

Unfortunately Dr. VanderVeen owns the practice.

I've been a patient in Dr.Vanderveen's practice for over ten years. She competent, professional and doesn't mix words. I think she has a wonderful sense of humor and is both kind and compassionate. It'd recommend her without hesitation to my friends and family.
