Dont get me wrong, I think it's sad that this happened. But dont people really know where it is that trains go?
I really feel sorry for the man, and his family.
But,... trains just dont jump out of nowhere.
Most of the time they travel down train tracks.

How stupid does someone need to be to get hit by a train?

Trains...stupid people's natural enemy.

Another thing is in that area the train moves pretty slow, and blow their horns a lot because there are so many crossings. A little strange.

I heard on the news this morning that the man passed away.

http://www.woodtv.com/dpp/news/local/grand_ra...

On Fox17 News last night they were asking people to look for his brother which is also homeless. I wonder if they were able to find him?

Man a guy cant even make a simple but also knowledgeable observation without being called a nut.

I live up near Leonard and College I can hear that dang train in my house and I am kind of hard of hearing.

And I have walked on lots of tracks in my day and there is one thing I know you look around.

Something fishy here.

I think this train was headed south. It would have been using its horn at several intersections before arriving at the scene of the accident where it would have been blowing its horn again. This is hard to explain, he was with two other guys, none of them heard the train coming down the west side for several minutes before it arrived at this intersection? On the other hand sometimes if wind conditions are right and you have folks hard of hearing, bundled up against the cold, maybe having a nip or two they might not realize the train is right on top of them before it is too late. There are all kinds of stories about people walking down tracks who get run over despite the fact the train is blowing the horn like crazy. Those are usually high speed incidents, this could not be high speed, looks like the train stopped right at the intersection. This is a shame for all involved and a lesson about being careful near tracks. A buddy of mine went down there and took photos, he caught several people on film crossing between the cars of the train while it was down there, actually climbing up on the couplers, that is like asking to get killed.

Doesn't sound like the guy should have even been in society:

http://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/index....

Buddy Medawis, who retired from the U.S. Army and lives in Texas, feared a tragic end for his brother, who friends say was staying at Mel Trotter Ministries. Buddy said his brother had lived with him at times while he served in the military, but he hadn't seen Matthew Medawis for several years. The last time was probably just before Medawis went to prison for his role in the 2003 kidnap and rape of a Grand Rapids cab driver.

He pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact after police said he and three others plotted to rob a cabby. Another man raped the cab driver.

His troubles with the law began in the mid-1970s, when he was sentenced to three to 10 years in prison for assault with intent to do great-bodily harm. In 1980, he was sentenced to four to eight years in prison for assault with a deadly weapon.

Did you even read the article you linked to?..."when he was hit from behind and dragged by a train is hard of hearing, and likely didn't know the train was bearing down on him, his friends said."

Yes he probably shouldn't have been walking down the tracks. He shouldn't have been homeless either. Two wrongs got him dead it seems.

Most of the people like this have a mental disorder and sense Reagan ended the Federal funding for the mentally disordered and turned the responsibility over to the penal system there has been an increase in these situations. We only see them reported as criminal cases, not why the (crimes) were committed in the first place.

More good Christian behavior to turn the mentally ill out to live as homeless people and then use the criminal justice system to harass and control them and jails to house them. Reagan, another GOP disgrace who the right wing wacko crowd adores.

You are your leftist friends are a the wackos Pete. You express "total outrage" when something like this happens, blame the right for all the ills of the world and STILL sit on your hands and DO NOTHING about these "ills" you insist the right caused. The left has absolutely no responsibility for any of these things??? Bill Clinton was in power for 8 years and DID NOTHING to change the situation and He came AFTER Ron Reagan. The left has been in control of this state AND this city for how long now and STILL nothing has been done about it.
Just for once, it would be really nice if you and your friends would show some maturity and realize that we are ALL human beings and it doesn't matter whether you have a "D" or an "R" or and "I" behind your name. These whole situations are sad and ALL should be outraged about it.
So just stop your self-righteous, better than thou attitude and step up to the plate if you are so upset about this.

Blah, blah, blah, Clinton could not raise taxes for the homeless anymore than Granholm can raise them now for schools. The right wing pukes have so polluted raising taxes for anything that it is impossible except for more law enforcement to make sure we dont see any bare titties or anything like that in our strip bars. They will approve all the money in the world to promote their right wing wacko religious crap but actually help someone, no fing way. Health care reform, can't have that, the crooks running the insurance companies might get mad and cut off out right wing wacko buddies in Congress. Money for welfare, oh no, can't have that, more prisons, sure, where do we sign up.

How much are you willing to pay per year in increased taxes for homeless shelters in downtown GR? How much are you willing to pay in increased taxes to restore last years school per diem? Probably not nearly as much as you are willing to pay to make sure I can't see nipples at Sensations and can't smoke a joint in my own house.

We need government funded homeless shelters far enough away from schools that sex offenders can stay there. The government is already subsidizing homeless shelters but with the Bush/Cheney depression still on us they need more help.

I think he was at a crossing Batch, I am not sure he was technically trespassing. That does not make the RR liable. It has to be a combination of hearing loss and alcohol that caused this tragedy.

I said that I felt bad for the person, and that it happened!

Maybe you need to spend some time reading before you go off and make an idiot of yourself.
