They should use plastic.
Coinage will than match the value of the currency's true worth.

Hmmm, time to rethink giving my pennies and nickels to my grandson. I may have to keep them to use as something of value when the paper dollar completely deflates.

Yeah, that would be great when my grand-kids suck on the pennies and nickels I give them!

Do we have any steel mills left here in the states? How much will they charge to make our steel nickles? Why not ship in our money from overseas, they have control over everything else here lately. We don't want to make them mad by not trading fair, do we.

Just like the zinc coated steel pennies of 1943.

That would save the government some of their own money, but it wouldn't save you a... penny. Why? Because stores would not round the price of goods down to the nearest nickel, they would -raise- the price to the nearest nickel. The government would keep more tax money and you would give them more, and spend more too.

I thought the idea of stopping steel coins in the first place was that they were susceptible to magnetism??? That is not a good thing for today's digital electronics in vending machines.

But, it gives the Government a new twist on 'steeling' our money.

You do realize that it now costs more to produce a penny than it is worth, right? So it would be costing us either way.

True, but at least as it stands now our penny is worth more than a paper dollar.
