Amen! Two of my four were starving this morning because they absolutely refused to touch their veggies last night (we have a rule - no seconds of anything until your first helpings are all gone.)
Going hungry (by choice) one night will NOT hurt any child.
And another great reward is that you haven't enables yet another adult picky eater :)

Not only that, but I've broken one... My hubby was terrible when we got married. I broke him by refusing to tell him what was in anything until after the dishes were done. "Oh, by the way, how did you like your rabbit?" "You know how you hate turnips? They were in that stew..." Turns out a LOT of things he "hated" he'd never even tried!

Since I don't have kids, I was totally thinking of my husband! His mother would make him a PBJ if he didn't like what was for dinner, and she says I'm the picky eater just because I don't like fish, geeeeez! I'm glad you are breaking the streak with your kids.

I've seen it all too often that the welfare program does PROMOTE generations of families staying on the welfare's "payroll". Most of society want our children to be "BETTER" off than us. But today's welfare system is just a "hand out" not a "hand up". Don't always blame the receipts of the welfare system its the governments fault not to break the dependence on the "hand out".

I always feel the need to qualify that my sentiments do not include all recipients. After one generation is comfortable with welfare (instead of using it as a temporary help), it just becomes a way of life and the temporary aspect is gone. Seems to me that the folks that need this as temporary are embarrassed and want nothing more than to get OFF it. The folks that use this as an entitlement are just looking for ways to get more aid and assisting their kids with how to get it instead of how to get OFF it. JMO

Amen Brother!!!

Solution - make them work for it??? Limit the Time frame to be on it??? Cap the dollar amount - if you have more kids while on welfare your dollar amount doesn't go up. Maybe they'd act a little more responsible... Just some ideas off the top of my head

Worked with a woman that got food stamps and cash assits. All she could do was complain about she needed time off so she could do other things. She's not there anymore. You don't get paid if you can't come to work.

For 'having a college education', you obviously forgot your spelling lessons, capitalization's, punctuations, etc.

I make it on a grocery bill of just about $200.00 a month for a family of 4. It's called clipping coupons, using off brands, shopping at Aldi's for my main staples (cereal, dry goods, etc), buying in bulk, freezing extra meals (and that would be with a standard fridge freezer), and making soups and sauces from scratch. Not only is it cheaper to make from scratch, it's also better for you because you don't get all the additives, preservatives, MSG or any of that crap. Spring and summer I buy as many fresh veggies as I can and blanch and freeze in meal sizes for the winter months.

It's possible, but you have to WANT to make it, not just complain about it. And my husband is laid off and in school, so I completely understand the jobless issues.

My husband has been out of work for four months, and we have two young children. He has had some contract work, but not much, and is looking diligently. Our savings was getting low so last month we applied for food stamps for the first time in our lives. Here's the thing....I've been scrimping and being super careful, buying surplus foods, etc.(even before my husband lost his job), and had our food budget down to $300/month. When we got our food stamps, we received more than DOUBLE that amount monthly!!! I was a bit taken aback realizing I could buy pretty much whatever I wanted after being so extremely careful. I am going to use the money to stock up our freezer and do some canning/preserving with food from the farmer's market. But yep, we went out and bought us some nice steaks!

I think that they give WAAAAAY too much money out. I know that I can live on far less, so this was really an eye opener for me.

You can buy any pop/candy/chips, junk food you want with food stamps. I am just really surprised.

When we went to the store to buy "whatever we wanted" (because we had two months on the card by the time it arrived) we said it was "fun" to pick out whatever we wanted in the store, but we sure didn't feel good doing it, if that makes sense.

The Public Assistance Agency can only advise what people should and should not purchase, in the past the food stamp coupons were sold illegally for 50 cents on the dollar, the government went to plastic ATM cards to regulate the purchases, as a retailer they can only have their POS systems programmed to stop purchase of Booze and Tobacco products etc.
Your Employer can be fined and lose his or her rights to participate in this ATM program, and law enforcement can set up sting operation for abuse of the food card ONLY if wealfare fraud is suspected such as someone working in a Bingo Hall getting cash under the counter, and I do know for a fact that people get busted.
I am not sure if you wish to file a complaint but for michigan try http://www.michigan.gov I think the Attorney General may investigate wealfare fraud if there is any probablility but may not step in if they are buying shrimp or King Crab.
However there is places that do not accept the following
Food Cards
WIC Coupons
Sams Club is One and Costco is another.
both places require membership around fifty bucks.
% SAMS CLUB ( takes food stamps) and if you make food stamps like wic your just going to hurt the people that do the right things with there food stamps my hubby works we have 5 kids and we get 300 a month in food stamps we make last thanks to sam's club we have a child with heart problems that has to eat different food than other 4 year old so it hurt if the state told use what to feed her

We too are on public assistance, my husband lost his job after he had a severe infection in his upper leg, he almost his life, SS denied his claim stating that he might be back to work within a year. I found a job but lost it due to a family emergency, I wasn't eligible for FMLA. We were living on less than 20 dollars a week and hardly had any food in the house. Our area is not doing good I got a call back on a job and the man told me after 7 days he had over 1000 applications for a collection job with no base pay! What the gov gives us is $100 less than our rent, forget the bills. They also give us $668 in food stamps, how we pay the bills, We borrow, beg, but we do not sell our food stamps. How are we doing, we are 2 months behind in rent and have a disconnect notice for power. I check ads for all local stores, plan out my meals for each day a month in advance, cut coupons, etc. I have 2 teenage kids that eat a ton, but are not overweight, I think I am making it work. What is not accounted for we plan at least one nice dinner. We do dress nice, whenever I get a little extra money I hit the thrift stores and buy off the 25 cent to 99 cent rack, so yes my daughter can wear gap jeans, and my son may be wearing Van shoes. I pass their clothes down to my friends kids. Sometimes we get free clothes from friends. My moms best friend's son is a year older than my son, like old navy, jinco, aeropostale, etc. Why should I buy a new plain t shirt for $3 when I can buy 3 brand name shirts for the same price? My kids never starve, but with the money I save by bargain shopping I can buy pop, sweets, etc, and it is required where I live to go to classes through the county to get the assistance. We don't drive expensive vehicles unless a 95 ford pick up that seats 3 people cramped and the exhaust is falling off, or the 95 station wagon my best friend gave me so we could all get to one place, that the gas gauge jumps all the time so you never know how much gas you have, counts. I pick up quick frozen snacks for my kids to eat when running around, because they are always on the go, hot pockets work good or pizza rolls because they can eat it while we are running to get where we need to get to. We asked the county if we could get help paying our rent, they offered to put us on a 5 year waiting list or wait till we are evicted and we could go into a homeless shelter and get moved up on a list for a county owned property. It's nice to buy candy for my kids, but that is their allowance instead of money like most kids get, they can always choose a favorite food instead like pizza or crab legs if they do real good with their chores. Does this make me a horrible parent? There is a time limit in my area for benefits, but I am honestly afraid of losing my medicaid because my daughter's seizure meds are 380 dollars for one dose, she is going to spend 3 days in the hospital for a video EEG, I could never afford this and she now has a pre existing condition, so getting insurance for her will prob be a bust. So if we're horrible people for just having expensive clothing, buying nice food now and then, for getting help to feed my 2 children even though I usually don't eat except dinner, yes sometimes we get them their favorite foods, or that I drink pop to stay up all night so I can keep an eye on my daughter who only has night time seizures and last time fell out of bed hit her head and passed out cold, but my kids only drink water, milk, and juice, well I guess I'm just a horrible person. Or the ones passing judgment could be wrong? I just sat down and figured out my monthly budget for food and it was 341.54 that is 11.54 a day to feed 4 people with pop, fruit snacks, Halloween candy, meats, and with the extras like cake mix, the kids get to pick their favorite foods, and I get to pick a nice dinner, maybe that is just budgeting...

NOT everyone shops this way. Don't judge until you are in these shoes.
I have been on both sides. I once needed food stamps and sometimes it was nice to have a steak. Not every meal but when you are in that position it can be a nice thing. I now work for the state in the department that issues FS. It is so easy to look at the people that abuse the system than it is to focus on the people that do it right. I like that one post "don't judge until you walk in their shoes". That would change so many peoples attitudes.

After having been laid off for a while and a wait of many weeks (6) for an unemployment check, we finally got a bridge card. We'd been eating popcorn and ramen noodles for a few weeks, so yes: I went to Meijer and bought a bunch of good food. We had a roast for dinner the first night with fresh vegetables and actual desert. It was wonderful and very much needed, if only for moral support.
After that we just bought normal food. Then, when I found a part time job, they cut is down to $200 a month.
But you seem to have money for internet service. Maybe if you had put a little money in an emergency fund you might of been able to go 6 weeks without whining about being hungry. Smart people are prepared for rainy days instead of waiting around to suck off the government tit.

Maybe I would hire you for my store if I thought you could read or write in English. By the way I can feed my family of three on $150 per month including all fresh fruits and vegetables because they get no pop, no junk food, no deserts except fruit, no processed foods (and I work a 50 hour week), and very little meat. Looks like you wasted that college English class (probably paid for by the government)

So what do you do with the other $326/month of food stamps? Sell them? Since your post 3 months ago that is almost $1000!
